Water, sanitation and schistosomiasis mansoni: a study based on the Brazilian National Prevalence Survey (2011-2015)

Abstract: This study aimed to explore the association between water, sanitation, and the prevalence of schistosomiasis mansoni in students aged 7 to 17 years from all 27 federative units in Brazil. It was a cross-sectional study conducted based on data on the prevalence of schistosomiasis mansoni referring to 197,567 students from 521 Brazilian municipalities, who participated in the National Survey on the Prevalence of Schistosomiasis Mansoni and Soil-transmitted Helminth Infections (2011-2015). Univariable and multiva… Show more

“…The effectiveness of interventions in the school environment, compared to actions in the community, has been reported and should be considered. An ecological study using prevalence data from the INPEG (32) and national household and public and private school sanitation data showed that access to safe drinking water in schools was a protective factor for the disease (PRR 0.982; 95% CI 0.970 -0.995) (33). This reinforces that water contact patterns are influenced by the availability of safe water supply, sanitation, and health education (34)(35)(36).…”

“…The ecological design of the study, with the municipality as the unit of analysis, impairs including behavioral and other individual variables in the model, likely associated with infection. The mechanism of schistosomiasis transmission is complex and includes several conditioning factors [72]. Thus, disease control depends on preventive measures, such as early diagnosis and timely treatment, health education, surveillance and control of intermediate hosts, and basic sanitation.…”
