Water Remediation from Pollutant Agents by the Use of an Environmentally Friendly Supramolecular Hydrogel

Abstract: The removal of Diclofenac sodium from waste waters has a high relevance since it belongs to the therapeutic group most commonly found in wastes. An aromatic-free and low-impact technology that efficiently entraps aqueous pollutants is highly desirable. We synthesised two Boc-protected and aromatic-free tripeptides (Boc-L-Ala-Aib-L-Val-OH and Boc-L-Val-Aib-L-Val-OH) and studied their ability to form gels with mixtures of water and alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol and 2-propanol. Boc-L-Ala-Aib-L-Val-OH forms … Show more

“…However, their application to the removal of PhACs from water is still at its beginning. Only recently, Giuri et al reported the use of Boc-protected tripeptide hydrogels for the removal of diclofenac from water [ 41 ].…”

“…Gelator 2 has been previously studied by our group and is able to form gels in mixtures of water and organic solvents (H 2 O/EtOH, H 2 O/ i PrOH) [ 30 ]. Despite our attempts using several triggers (GdL, calcium, arginine), this gelator is not able to form hydrogels but rather precipitates or crystalizes in the presence of water.…”

“…Amide bonds are involved in H‐bonds, as well as polar side chains 10–12 . Aromatic moieties of protecting group or of side chains offer stacking interactions, 11,13,14 whereas apolar side chains can contribute with weak hydrophobic interactions 15–17 . Because of their usual biocompatibility 12,18,19 and the ease of rationalizing a good gelator by varying either protecting groups or amino acids, peptides have been thoroughly explored for their gelation abilities.…”

“…20 Nonetheless, gelators with similar structures often behave differently, some forming gels, some others forming crystals or precipitates. 15,21,22 In these last years, a large number of compounds and gelation conditions were tested, and the research in this field led to a remarkable improvement in understanding of general principles behind LMW gel formation and properties. 23,24 It should also be noticed that in this field, it is of extreme importance to work in a reproducible way, carefully controlling all the parameters and steps involved in the gelation process (solvent, concentration, time, temperature, etc.).…”
