Since the Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation, new biological indices based on macroinvertebrates have been developed, mainly focusing on multimetric approaches. This work checks the relationship among several biotic indices [Iberian Biological Monitoring Working Party (IBMWP), Indice Biotico Esteso, Indice Biologique Global Normalisé] and one multimetric index (METI) proposed for NW Spain rivers, and their behaviour using different physicochemical parameters throughout the different typologies defined for NW Spain rivers according to the WFD. It is also tested whether the reference sites and conditions established are representative enough of each typology comparing the IBMWP and METI in reference and non‐reference sampling sites. As a whole, the METI showed the lowest correlations with the rest of the indices, whereas the IBMWP showed the highest and all indices displayed negative correlations with those variables, which caused pollution in all typologies. Furthermore, it has been found sites with an index value higher than that of the reference sites and therefore in a better status than the selected reference sites, revealing several shortcomings in the selection of the reference sites in NW Spain and proving that a good selection of the reference sites is extremely important to produce successful results. Finally, the IBMWP has proved to be a useful tool to assess freshwater ecosystems in NW Spain showing how a simple index can be satisfactorily used to monitor ‘Ecological status’. This study was carried out between March 2011 and February 2012 on Değirmendere Stream in order to determine the water quality of the stream, and to investigate the environmental quality and the applicability of both the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP; Original, Spanish, Hungarian, Czech, and Polish versions) and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT; Original, Hungarian, and Czech versions) indices. The biotic and diversity indices were applied using the ASTERICS software program. As a result, a total of 59 taxa were detected: 4 taxa from Gastropoda, 1 taxon from Bivalvia, 1 taxon from Oligochaeta, 1 taxon from Hirudinea, 2 taxa from Crustacea, and 50 taxa from Insecta. The water quality of Değirmendere Stream was found to be unpolluted/slightly polluted according to the physicochemical data and the different versions of the BMWP and ASPT. However, the score values of the different versions of the BMWP were different from each other because the versions of the BMWP were adapted based on the geological and ecological features of their source countries. The results of this study suggest that there is still a need for much intensive investigation and further testing of the effectiveness of the BMWP and ASPT indices for use in the streams of Turkey. The findings also strongly indicate that these indices should be adapted based on the geomorphological and environmental features of Turkey.

Rivers have been frequently assessed based on the presence of the EphemeropteraPlecoptera-Trichoptera (EPT) taxa in order to determine the water quality status and develop conservation programs. This research evaluates the abiotic preferences of three families of the EPT taxa Baetidae, Leptoceridae and Perlidae in the Machangara River Basin located in the southern Andes of Ecuador. With this objective, using generalized linear models (GLMs), we analyzed the relation between the probability of occurrence of these pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrates families and physicochemical water quality conditions. The explanatory variables of the constructed GLMs differed substantially among the taxa, as did the preference range of the common predictors. In total, eight variables had a substantial influence on the outcomes of the three models. For choosing the best predictors of each studied taxa and for evaluation of the accuracy of its models, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) was used. The results indicated that the GLMs can be applied to predict either the presence or the absence of the invertebrate taxa and moreover, to clarify the relation to the environmental conditions of the stream. In this manner, these modeling tools can help to determine key variables for river restoration and protection management.
