Reservoirs are vital water sources that contribute significantly to local ecological and environmental balance, particularly in semi-arid regions. An evaluation of the drinking water quality index (WQI) has been conducted using ten water parameters like electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl-), pH, total hardness (TH), total alkalinity (TA), phosphate (PO43-), dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate (NO3-), total dissolved solids (TDS), and sulfate (SO42-). Weighed Arithmetic Index technique is utilized for examining drinking water quality status and USEPA model was utilized to determine the non-carcinogenic risk for ingestion of nitrate of Bhosga reservoir of Kalaburagi district which was measured at five predefined sites from October 2020 to September 2021. All the parameters of potable water were below the allowable limits based on given standards. The maximum WQI results were reported in monsoon season, with a mean WQI value of 48.14 from all the five selected sites, with the pre & post-monsoon seasons a mean WQI result of 46.08 and 43.68, respectively. Overall, the WQI value signifies that the water was of good quality, making it worthy for domestic use. The outcome of this study reveals that the pH and DO position have a substantial impact on reservoir WQI. Non-carcinogenic risk for nitrate ingestion reveled that, seasonal HQ average results for adults and children are ranging between 0.036 to 0.040 and 0.065 to 0.071, respectively and the HQ results for both adults and children were below 1, indicating neither adults nor children had any negative effect. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis revealed that primary causes of water quality degradation were agricultural runoff and anthropogenic activities. To ensure the security and the quality of water supply to people who live in the surrounding region, simple filter treating of reservoir water prior usage is needed.

Surface water chemistry of the upper Narmada River was investigated at 13 different locations for 4 consecutive years (2017 to 2020) during pre- and post-monsoon seasons. The main objective of the study was to identify the processes governing the water chemistry of Narmada River and evaluate its suitability for irrigation. The physical parameters estimated were; pH (7.9 ± 0.4 for pre- and 8 ± 0.4 for post-monsoon seasons), EC (322.8±93.3 μS/cm for pre- and 312.1±80.2 μS/cm for post-monsoon) and TDS (203.4±41.5 mg/L for pre-and 213.4±48 mg/L for post-monsoon). The obtained concentration of cations and anions were in the order of Ca++ > Na+ > Mg++> K+ and HCO3−> Cl−>SO4−> NO3−> PO4− respectively. Thus, the water of Narmada was found to be alkaline in nature. Piper diagram inferred that the water was dominated by Ca-Mg-HCO3− type of hydrochemical faces. Gibb's plot clarified that rock-water interaction regulates the ion chemistry of the Narmada. Various indices like sodium percentage (Na%), sodium absorption ration (SAR), Kelly index (Ki), permeability index (PI), magnesium hazard (MH) was calculated which showed that the surface water was suitable for irrigation. Lastly, one-way ANOVA (p < 0.05) confirmed no significant differences in water quality except for temperature, EC and SO4−, for pre- and post-monsoon season.

The utilization of water quality analysis to inform optimal decision‐making is imperative to achieve sustainable management of river water quality. A multitude of research works in the past has focused on river water quality modeling. Despite being a precise statistical regression technique that allows for fitting separate models for all potential combinations of predictors and selecting the optimal subset model, the application of best subset method in river water quality modeling is not widely adopted. The current research aims to validate the use of best subset method in evaluating the water quality parameters of the Godavari River, one of the largest rivers in India, by developing regression equations for different combinations of its physicochemical parameters. The study involves in formulating best subset regression equations to estimate the concentrations of river water quality parameters while also identifying and quantifying their variations. A total of 17 water quality parameters are analyzed at 13 monitoring sites using 13 years (1993–2005) of observed data for the monsoon (June–October) period and post‐monsoon (November–February) period. The final subset model is selected among model combinations that are developed for each year's dataset through widely used statistical criteria such as R2, F value, adjusted R2a, AICc, and RSS. The final best subset model across all parameters exhibits R2 values surpassing 0.8, indicating that the models possess the ability to account for over 80% of the variations in the concentrations of dependent parameters. Therefore, the findings demonstrated the appropriateness of this method in evaluating the water quality parameters in extensive rivers. This work is very useful for decision‐making and in the management of river water quality for its sustainable use in the study area.
