Water quality assessment based on Nemerow pollution index method: A case study of Heilongtan reservoir in central Sichuan province, China

Abstract: In this paper, three monitoring sections were set up in Heilongtan Reservoir, and water samples were collected in 2019, 2020, and 2021 for the determination of physical and chemical properties such as permanganate index, chemical oxygen demand, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). The water quality was evaluated by the single factor pollution index method and the Nemerow pollution index method, and the temporal and spatial changes of water quality were analyzed. The single factor pollution index method determi… Show more

“…EM is usually combined with the comprehensive assessment method to perform risk assessment in food safety, and the related work is presented in the Section Comprehensive assessment . NPI is a weighted multi-factor pollution index, which emphasizes the most polluting factors while also considering the contribution of other factors in the assessment system 33 . This method first calculates the single-factor pollution index, then computes the comprehensive pollution index using the maximum and the average of the single-factor pollution index, such as calculating the heavy metal contamination risk of edible mushrooms 34 and vegetables 35 .…”

“…96/2019, 20/2023 and 50/2023, [33]) defined for Cd, Pb and Ni. The pollution index was calculated using the following formula [34]: The concentrations of all TMs shown in Figure 5 clearly show that they fluctuated considerably during the 8 days of sampling but exhibited a common pattern. Especially indicative changes were registered for Zn and Cu, and to some extent also for Cd and Pb.…”

“…Multiple types of heavy metals often coexist in water bodies, and the Nemerow integrated pollution index method is a common method for evaluating heavy metal pollution in water bodies. It can reflect the current status of heavy metal pollution in water bodies and the different contributions of various heavy metals to the composite pollution effect, and it can screen the main pollutants 24 . The single-factor pollution index is divided into four levels, namely, P i ≤ 1 for no pollution, 1 < P i ≤ 2 for low pollution, 2 < P i ≤ 3 for medium pollution, and P i > 3 for high pollution.…”
