Water Quality and Microbial Dynamics in Shrimp Ponds Receiving Bagasse‐Based Feed

Abstract: Pond water quality and associated microbial biomass were studied in relation to the type of feed applied during the culture of the marine shrimp Penaeus vannamei. The feeds tested included conventional feedlot manure as well as two feeds based on bagasse, a sugarcane waste product.Physical and chemical parameters were studied during a 100 day trial in 200 m2 earthen ponds. Both bagasse-based feeds supported a significantly larger microbial community as measured by specific biomass numbers (P < 0.01), ATP conten… Show more

“…Chlorophyll concentrations in our ponds were also comparable with those in other studies of shrimp ponds (e.g. Visscher & Duerr 1991;Briggs & Funge-Smith 1994;Burford 1997). Concentrations were higher in the second sampling period, but this is probably the result of short-term trends rather than a trend over the growth season.…”

“…Values for the physical parameters and nutrients for the two sampling periods early and late in the growth season were comparable with those in other studies of shrimp ponds (e.g. Visscher & Duerr 1991;Boyd & Fast 1992;Fast & Lannan 1992;Briggs & Funge-Smith 1994). “…Using the quantified minimum estimates of 38–91 mmoles‐C m −2 day −1 for bacterial C productivity (Figures 4–7 using mean pond depth of 0.7 m) and a cellular level productivity of 50 fg‐C cell −1 day −1 , it is estimated that sediment cell densities are order 10 8 –10 9 cell cm −3 (this calculation does not include a growth efficiency). This estimate of cell densities is consistent with other studies [ Torsvik et al , 1996; Visscher and Duerr , 1991].…”

“…Additionally, the natural environment where L. vannamei is found is typically turbid with low visibility and high amounts of substrate (Visscher & Duerr, 1991), where no light of wavelength below 500 nm can penetrate. Thus, the perception and preference for yellow and red colours better match the light conditions present in natural environment, which may improve FI and growth in such places.…”
