With the rapid development of society and the economy, an increasing number of human activities have gradually destroyed the marine environment. Marine environment monitoring is a vital problem and has increasingly attracted a great deal of research and development attention. During the past decade, various marine environment monitoring systems have been developed. The traditional marine environment monitoring system using an oceanographic research vessel is expensive and time-consuming and has a low resolution both in time and space. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have recently been considered as potentially promising alternatives for monitoring marine environments since they have a number of advantages such as unmanned operation, easy deployment, real-time monitoring, and relatively low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art technologies in the field of marine environment monitoring using wireless sensor networks. It first describes application areas, a common architecture of WSN-based oceanographic monitoring systems, a general architecture of an oceanographic sensor node, sensing parameters and sensors, and wireless communication technologies. Then, it presents a detailed review of some related projects, systems, techniques, approaches and algorithms. It also discusses challenges and opportunities in the research, development, and deployment of wireless sensor networks for marine environment monitoring.

The adoption of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for environmental monitoring is currently considered one of the most challenging applications for this emerging technology. These set of sensors that collaboratively perform embedded sensing and communication tasks owned features such as low cost, flexibility, fault tolerance, high sensing fidelity, creating many new and exciting applications for remote sensing and space industry where many essential phenomena have hardly been investigated. In this paper, a state-of-art survey clearly shows the WSNs have been successfully implemented and tested in remote sensing applications. Morevever, the developments and challenges in design WSNs for space-based application are discussed in order boost the use of WSNs in remote sensing and space industry in Egypt.

The rapid development of society has generated an increasing number of human activities that have gradually modified the marine environment. Wirless sensor networks present a potentially promising alternative for monitoring marine environments. Usually, the topology of a monitoring system is integrated by a group of fixed buoys that gather data, and a coordinator node is responsible to sent the data to a processing center. This topology does not demand a routing protocol, however in some situations such as monitoring currents behavior demands a certain level of bouys mobility and as a consequence requieres a more complex communication mechanism to send the information to the processing center. This paper presents HYRMA, a clusterbased hybrid routing protocol focused on the reduction of energy consumption which is applied in a marine environment Based on the results obtained from simulator, HYRMA is shown to be a suitable mechanism for data transmissions in a WSN applied in a marine environment.
