Water mites (Hydrachnidia, Acari) in the lakes of the Masurian Landscape Park, Poland

Abstract: 2,229 water mites representing 56 species were collected in seven Mazurian lakes. Six faunal elements were distinguished: lacustrine, eurytopic typical of small water bodies, tyrphophilic, rheobiontic, rheophilic and astatic spring fauna. The species structure was dominated by the lacustrine element, and the numerical structure -by eurytopic species occurring in small water bodies. Six species indicatory of moderate lake eutrophy were recorded, i.e. Atractides ovalis, Limnesia polonica, Unionicola mionor, Pion… Show more

“…These species were caught mainly in marginal pools and in mesohabitats with well-developed aquatic vegetation, such as K7/2-3 or K8/1-3 (Online Resources 1 and 2 in the ESM). The significant proportion of rheoxenes in lowland river fauna in certain habitats is a natural phenomenon (Böttger and Hoerschelmann 1991;Cichocka 2006;Stryjecki 2009). …”

“…Th is ind icator is related to the trophic state of lakes and their degree of degradation. This indicator has been found to range from 0.15 to 4.8 in different Polish lakes (Cichocka and Biesiadka, 1994;Cichocka, 2000Cichocka, , 2005. The value of this indicator calculated for Lake Świdwie Wielkie indicates a very good ecological status of this water body.…”

“…those which do not occur or are encountered only sporadically and in small nu mbers outside of lake environ ments (Biesiadka, 1987(Biesiadka, , 2008. The number o f water mite species caught in individual lakes of Poland is highly varied; fro m 3 to 96 species have been found in the lakes that have Table 1. been studied thus far (Pieczyński, 1976;Biesiadka, 1980Biesiadka, , 1987Biesiadka, , 2003Ko walik, 1978;Zawal, 1992Zawal, , 2007Cichocka and Biesiadka, 1994;Cichocka, 2000Cichocka, , 2005Stryjecki, 2012;Zawal et al, 2013). In other regions of Europe, the number of species caught in lakes has ranged fro m 4 to 56 (Viets, 1979;Davids et al, 1994;Bagge, 1999;Di Sabatino et al, 2004;Baker et al, 2008).…”
