As one of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) outflow passages, the Sumba Strait is a meeting point for the Pacific and the Indian Ocean water mass. In order to study the long-term variability of ITF flowing via Sumba Strait, this research uses observational data from the Ekspedisi WIdya Nusantara (EWIN) research cruise conducted in August 2016 to validate the altimetric geostrophic surface current by referencing the shear velocity. Stating the referenced level to 700 m, geostrophic transport is calculated using the Monthly Isopycnal/Mixed-Layer Ocean Climatology (MIMOC) data. Over the period of 1993-2016, the results demonstrate a dominant seasonal pattern for the geostrophic variability. While the total geostrophic transport shows a main westward direction towards the Indian Ocean, the Sumba Strait provides only a small portion (less than 0.1 Sv) for westward ITF geostrophic current. Intraseasonally, the maximum transport occurs during the southeast monsoon. The reversal of South Java Current (SJC), which flows with the eastward direction heading to the Savu Sea, is observed as the intrusion for westward ITF in almost every monsoon season. Despite having an unclear year to year cycle, climate mode of the Indian Ocean may have more influence on the surface geostrophic variability at the Sumba Strait. On the other hand, ocean-atmosphere coupling in the Pacific Ocean has a role in regulating geostrophic transport variation within the Sumba Strait. Using a statistical approach, the findings emphasize that the throughflow may well be impacted as well as feedback on both ENSO and IOD since there is robustness in those variables.

Short-Term Variation of the Surface Flow Pattern South of Lombok Strait Observed from the Himawari-8 Sea Surface Temperature

Spatial and temporal information on oceanic flow is fundamental to oceanography and crucial for marine-related social activities. This study attempts to describe the short-term surface flow variation in the area south of the Lombok Strait in the northern summer using the hourly Himawari-8 sea surface temperature (SST). Although the uncertainty of this temperature is relatively high (about 0.6 ∘ C), it could be used to discuss the flow variation with high spatial resolution because sufficient SST differences are found between the areas north and south of the strait. The maximum cross-correlation (MCC) method is used to estimate the surface velocity. The Himawari-8 SST clearly shows Flores Sea water intruding into the Indian Ocean with the high-SST water forming a warm thermal plume on a tidal cycle. This thermal plume flows southward at a speed of about 2 m / s . The Himawari-8 SST indicates a southward flow from the Lombok Strait to the Indian Ocean, which blocks the South Java Current flowing eastward along the southern coast of Nusa Tenggara. Although the satellite data is limited to the surface, we found it useful for understanding the spatial and temporal variations in the surface flow field.

Setiap perairan di Indonesia memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda-beda tergantung pada kedalaman perairan tersebut. Secara bentuk topografi, Laut Banda memiliki kedalaman di atas 5000 m sehingga memiliki karakteristik massa air laut yang unik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkomparasi variabel massa air berupa suhu, salinitas dan densitas yang melewati Laut Banda berdasarkan data model global CMEMS Copernicus dengan data observasi Ekspedisi Jala Citra 2 – 2022 “Banda”. Penggambaran variabel massa air tersebut dilakukan dengan perangkat lunak ODV V.5.5.2 untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis massa air berdasarkan dimana daerah asalnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jenis massa air dari data model global Copernicus dan observasi Ekspedisi Jala Citra 2 – 2022 “Banda” didominasi oleh 3 jenis massa air yaitu massa air yang berasal dari Samudera Pasifik Utara berupa Western South Pacific Central Water dengan karakteristik suhu 6⁰-22⁰C dan salinitas 34,5-35,8 PSU, serta massa air yang berasal dari Samudera Pasifik Selatan berupa Eastern South Pacific Central Water dengan karakteristik suhu 8⁰-24⁰C dan salinitas 34,4-36,4 PSU, kemudian North Pacific Equatorial Water dengan karakteristik suhu 6⁰-16⁰C dan salinitas 34,5-35,2 PSU.
