Water lubrication of graphene oxide-based materials

Abstract: Water is as an economic, eco-friendly, and efficient lubricant that has gained widespread attention for manufacturing. Using graphene oxide (GO)-based materials can improve the lubricant efficacy of water lubrication due to their outstanding mechanical properties, water dispersibility, and broad application scenarios. In this review, we offer a brief introduction about the background of water lubrication and GO. Subsequently, the synthesis, structure, and lubrication theory of GO are analyzed. Particular atten… Show more

“…Compared with common oil-based lubricants, water-based lubricants have been given great expectations and attention because they are more economical and environmentally friendly, but they have shortcomings in anti-friction and load-bearing capacity, and their application is limited. 70 In order to improve the inherent defects of water-based lubricants, researchers have come up with many solutions, and a variety of nanomaterials have been developed for use as additives in water-based lubrication. Table 3 lists some typical nanomaterials used in water lubrication.…”

“…Graphene is a single-layer, two-dimensional (2D) material composed of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern with sp 2 hybridization, exhibiting exceptional bonding strength due to its high bond energies (Geim, 2009). This unique structure of graphene endues its exceptional electrical conductivity (Park et al , 2014), thermal conductivity (Renteria et al , 2014), mechanical properties (Papageorgiou et al , 2017; Su and Tsai, 2021) and tribological properties (Lin et al , 2021a; Xue et al , 2021). The dispersion of graphene in water-based polymer systems is also very important, which provides some new ideas for studying the improvement of friction properties of water-based polymer (Zhang et al , 2021a; Zhang et al , 2021b; Zhang et al , 2022).…”

“…The development of nanosized materials is a developing area of scientific research that can have many possible applications in physical, biological, chemical, clinical, and medical research. One of the most common and abundant nanomaterials in research are carbon-based materials, such as carbon dots, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxide, graphene, and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) [24][25][26]. In particular, CDs have inimitable physical properties that have drawn much attention for their application in a wide variety of industrial nanotechnology applications.…”
