Water in the gas phase

Abstract: Switch on the weather forecast any evening and one is left in no doubt as to the importance of water in the Earth's atmosphere: will the water be gaseous (humidity), liquid (clouds, rain), solid (snow, ice or hail) or taken up by aerosol (haze) particles? The long-term role of water in our climate, and of course any change in our climate, is no less profound. The water vapour is both the dominant absorber of incoming sunlight and the major greenhouse gas, so any climate model has to adequately account for its … Show more

“…The vibration–rotation transitions of water at infrared wavelengths have been studied for many decades in the laboratory, , and all the relevant molecular data are summarized in the HITRAN database at . Most recently, line lists appropriate for temperatures up to several thousand kelvin and including higher vibrational transitions have been published for water and its isotopologues , and are posted at . The higher temperature data are particularly important for exoplanets and cool stellar atmospheres.…”

“…In particular, the importance of detailed spectroscopic information about water vapor was highlighted in Ref. [54]. The availability of high-resolution spectroscopic data would be especially beneficial in the research of the greenhouse effect [60], as well as in the characterization of combustion systems [36].…”

“…7,8 Although we would have liked to perform all calculations with the aug-cc-pCVnZ basis sets, unfortunately we have not been able to carry out calculations with the augcc-pCV6Z orbital set because, with the present version of our program, we need more than 350 GB of RAM to perform the 4-index transformation of its 533 primitive functions (more information in connection with the results). Therefore, our study is primarily based on the results with the cc-pCVnZ bases.…”
