In today's extreme conditions of operation of nuclear power plants (NPP) of Ukraine, the need to improve systems and strategies for managing accidents with complete long-term blackout (CLTB) is especially urgent. A method of determining the conditions for the occurrence of thermal hydrodynamic instability (THI) in passive safety systems with natural circulation circuits (PSS NC) has been developed, based on the fundamental thermodynamic principles of analyzing the impact on stability of fluctuating deviations of pressure and mass flow of the working medium from the established (equilibrium) state. Using the examples of the small modular reactor (SMP) and the high power reactor (АР1000) of the Westinghouse company, the criteria and conditions of THI in accidents with leaks in the natural circulation circuits of the NPP are defined in a general format. The developed method of determining the criteria and conditions of THI in PSS NC can be applied by design, operating and regulatory organizations for deterministic analysis of the safety of NPPs of the AP/SMP type.

The subject of research is the thermoacoustic instability (TAI) of the coolant of a nuclear reactor core. The occurrence of TAI in the reactor core leads to high-frequency and high-amplitude cyclic loads on internal reactor structures and can be one of the reasons for the loss of tightness of fuel elements. A criterion method has been developed for determining the boundaries of the coolant TAI area in the nuclear reactor core under operating, transient and emergency modes. Based on the developed method, the occurrence of TAI area in the coolant was determined, with the criteria of TAI being formulated. A dimensionless determining criterion of the TAI area was justified depending on the rate of heat release, flow rate and enthalpy of the coolant at the entry to the reactor core. Applying the format of dimensionless parameters, the area of TAI of a water-cooled reactor core has been determined, with the relative power of the reactor being more than 0.25 and the relative flow rate of the coolant being less than 0.75.

An original thermal-hydraulic method for optimizing the thermal resistance of thermal conductivity of fuel rod matrix upgrades has been developed to achieve the maximum burnup depth of nuclear fuel while ensuring safety conditions in operating and emergency modes of nuclear power plants. Based on the developed method, the boundaries of the optimization area for upgrades of the thermal resistance of the fuel rod matrix thermal conductivity are determined in accordance with the accepted optimization criteria and safety conditions. It is established that when optimizing upgrades to the thermal resistance of nuclear fuel, it is necessary to take into account both normal operating conditions and emergency conditions with impaired heat removal from the reactor core. It is established that the optimal values of thermal resistance of nuclear fuel thermal conductivity depend on the design and technical parameters of reactor installations, composition, and condition of nuclear fuel, accident management systems, and other factors.
