Though different technical approaches have been applied, Addis Ababa water bodies are persistently facing problems that affect their biological, economic, sociological, and ecological assets. To fill the technical gaps, multi-stakeholder collaborative governance approaches are unfolding, in the academia, as the important tools or methods of dealing with water problems. Thus, the basic objective of this qualitative exploratory study is analyzing the processes and outcomes of multistakeholder collaboration structures on the governance of urban water projects, and developing potential pathways of building collaboration among stakeholders for the governance of water bodies. The results of this study show that the processes of multi-stakeholder dialogues are handicapped by the absence of prehistory of collaborations, asymmetrical pre-deliberation communication, and the representation of stakeholders by individuals with no experience or the required expertise, and the lack of willingness among stakeholders to engage in the process of dialogues. The activities of supervision, evaluation, river assessment programs, and the establishment of stable and secured governance frameworks are loaded in a few government sectors, leading to the eruption of multiple problems. On the other hand, the potential pathways of building strong collaboration among stakeholders require a systematic procedure that establishes legal, political, and administrative commonality among stakeholders. This guides to instill responsibility, ownership, and commitment on the leaders, directors, and experts to work with others. The study concludes that urban water problems could not be well addressed unless the governance structures are built in advance by making the pre-deliberation and deliberation processes that combine the principles of simplicity, symmetrical communication with all stakeholders, the appointment of experts, and the development of a regular collaboration system. Further, these would enable to govern water governance projects effectively by combining the ecological, social, political, and economic perspectives. Besides, considering cultural, legal, social, and political contexts and establishing individual and organization sensitive committees at various levels is crucial for sustainability and adaptability.

Water resources are fundamental for the social and economic development of a country and sustainability is the best approach to treat water-related problems. Therefore, sustainability studies of water resources are deemed urgent. Sustainability analysis methods should enable space-temporal monitoring, decision-making, and development of policies necessary for water governance. Furthermore, sustainability analysis methods should also integrate environment and socioeconomic variables into a single system. In this context, this study aimed to assess the water sustainability conditions of the River Grande Basin (BHRG), Brazil, before the implementation of the Integrated Water Resources Plan (IWRP), using the Barometer of Sustainability tool (BS). The River Grande basin was in an “almost unsustainable” condition and under high environmental stress. A significant imbalance between environmental and human well-being in the system was also observed. To achieve an acceptable sustainability condition, it is thus necessary to improve the environmental quality of the area. Among the priority thematic area, native vegetation recovery was the most urgent. Overall, the sustainability study based on the BS not only facilitates comprehension regarding environment and human interrelationships, but also provide references for policy formulations and water management.

Multifunctional agriculture (MFA) and ecosystem services (ES) are two important concepts in the ongoing debate on sustainable resource use. The aim of the paper is to test the ES and MFA nexus by analyzing the perception and predefined attitudes of key stakeholders in three Southern European irrigation systems. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, and the interview transcripts were codified using the Atlas.ti © qualitative analysis software. Our results illustrate that perceptions of ES go beyond those included in literature, and this provides valuable information about how key stakeholders interact with the environment in MFA systems. Second, most key stakeholders claim to be moving from anthropocentric agriculture to ecocentric rural development in order to ensure the sustainability of agricultural activity and to preserve common pool resources. Finally, the results show that bottom-up tools could identify the nexus between ES and MFA. Given our results, we provide a series of recommendations to managers be able to (a) improve comprehension of environmental services and functions, (b) enhance water user experiences and interests, and (c) encourage pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors in farmers. The paper also provides the research community with a codifying process they can use to define and improve informal and indirect references to MFA and ES standards.
