This review summarizes the findings of the most recent studies, published from 2000 to 2016, which focus on the biogeochemical behavior of Cd in soil-plant systems and its impact on the ecosystem. For animals and people not subjected to a Cd-contaminated environment, consumption of Cd contaminated food (vegetables, cereals, pulses and legumes) is the main source of Cd exposure. As Cd does not have any known biological function, and can further cause serious deleterious effects both in plants and mammalian consumers, cycling of Cd within the soil-plant system is of high global relevance.The main source of Cd in soil is that which originates as emissions from various industrial processes. Within soil, Cd occurs in various chemical forms which differ greatly with respect to their lability and phytoavailability. Cadmium has a high phytoaccumulation index because of its low adsorption coefficient and high soil-plant mobility and thereby may enter the food chain. Plant uptake of Cd is believed to occur mainly via roots by specific and non-specific transporters of essential nutrients, as no Cd-specific transporter has yet been identified. Within plants, Cd causes phytotoxicity by decreasing nutrient uptake, inhibiting photosynthesis, plant growth and respiration, inducing lipid peroxidation and altering the antioxidant system and functioning of membranes. Plants tackle Cd toxicity via different defense strategies such as decreased Cd uptake or sequestration into vacuoles. In addition, various antioxidants combat Cd-induced overproduction of ROS. Other mechanisms involve the induction of phytochelatins, glutathione and salicylic acid.

Concentration of these heavy metal(loid)s in soil has increased drastically over the last three decades, thus posing risk to the environment and human health. Some technologies have long been in use to remediate the hazardous heavy metal(loid)s. Conventional remediation methods for heavy metal(loid)s are generally based on physical, chemical and biological approaches, which may be used in combination with one another to clean-up heavy metal(loid) contaminated soils to an acceptable and safe level. This review summarizes the soil contamination by heavy metal(loid)s at a global scale, accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s in vegetables to toxic levels and their regulatory guidelines in soil. In this review, we also elucidate and compare the pool of available technologies that are currently being applied for remediation of heavy metal(loid) contaminated soils, as well as the economic aspect of soil remediation for different techniques. This review article includes an assessment of the contemporary status of technology deployment and recommendations for future remediation research. Finally, the molecular and genetic basis of heavy metal(loid) (hyper)accumulation and tolerance in microbes and plants is also discussed. It is proposed that for effective and economic remediation of soil, a better understanding of remediation procedures and the various options available at the different stages of remediation is highly necessary.

Role of metal speciation in lead-induced oxidative stress to Vicia faba roots

Chemical speciation of metals in soil/solution plays an important role in determining their bio geochemical behavior in soil plant system. The current study evaluated the influence of applied form of Pb (metal speciation) on its toxicity to metal sensitive Vicia faba L. roots. Lead was applied to young V. faba seed lings alone or chelated by organic ligands (citric acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). Plants were exposed to all treatments for 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h in nutrient solution, and contents of H 2 O 2 and thiobarbitu ric acid reactive substances (TBARS) production were analyzed in V. faba roots. The results showed that Pb toxicity to V. faba roots depended on its applied chemical form and duration of exposure. Lead alone caused two burst of lipid peroxidation and H 2 O 2 induction at 1 h and 12 h. Addition of EDTA dose dependently inhibited Pb induced H 2 O 2 and TBARS production, indicating a protective role of this chelator against Pb toxicity during the first 24 h. In contrast, citric acid did not show significant effects on Pb induced H 2 O 2 and TBARS production, but delayed the induction of these effects. This study suggested that Pb toxicity to V. faba roots varies with Pb speciation in growth medium.
