Sustainability of Recycling Waste Picker Sustainopreneurs for Prevention and Mitigation of Municipal Solid Waste in Swat

This study assessed the role of waste picker sustainopreneurs (WPS) by examining their recycling contributions in a special case of District Swat, Pakistan. Using a transformative worldview, this study acknowledges their contributions to recycling. The study envisages how entrepreneurial agency works in unanticipated ways where the poorest of the poor enterprise without resources demonstrate unexpected agency to improve the environment. An inductive research design in conjunction with grounded theory was used to analyze data from 37 interviews in three tehsils of District Swat. The recycling sector uses primitive measures, which are completely informal, self-organized, and self-controlled. Surprisingly, we discovered that informal recycling contributes unfavorably to waste, energy, and food (WEF) security due to intermixing and adulteration, as well as acts as a gray channel for illicit practices that have taken advantage of tax amnesty in the area until 2023. The uncontrolled welding of half cut and nose cut car parts has skyrocketed the motorization index and CO2 emissions; however, it has also resulted in alternative sources of livelihoods, as these accidental environmentalists had found modern sources of income. This is similar to low-tech innovation and business creation that takes advantage of tax holidays due to the special status of District Swat. The study highlights the most and least valuable recyclables and identifies the gray channel markets of spare parts, metal recycling, counterfeit products, fuel intermixing, and adulteration. The study contributes by untangling the understanding of a legal gambit of tax amnesty at a critical pre-policy input as well as advocates for rights of invisible stakeholders of waste management in Pakistan.

The twenty-first century is witnessing an explosion in global population, environmental changes, agricultural land disintegration, hunger, and geopolitical instabilities. It is difficult to manage these conditions or standardize improvement systems without thinking of the three main elements or subsystems that are necessary for any meaningful development—namely water (W), energy (E), and food (F). These key elements form what is globally agreed upon as the “WEF Nexus.” While considering them, one should think about the other key factors that influence WEF Nexus, including population’s growth, impacts of environmental changes (including climate change), moderation and adaptation regimes to climate change and climate resilience, loss of biodiversity, and sustainable nature. Together, the WEF Nexus subsystems represent a framework to ensure environmental protection that should be seen as an ethical and socioeconomic obligation. Issues, such as protection of water resources, and strategies and management tools or mechanisms for the use of water assets and agricultural innovations under the obligations of sustainable use, are investigated in this paper. Attention is paid to the relationship between water and food (WF Nexus) or water for food security in various world regions, including the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Central Asia countries and the Caucasus, China, Africa, and Canada. This paper also presents analyses of a great number of up-to-date publications regarding the “Nexus” perspective and its applications and limitations. This paper suggests that the Nexus’ approach, in its different concepts (WEF, WE, WF and EF), can promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life of communities, while preserving natural, human, and social capital, addressing sustainability challenges, and protecting natural resources and the environment for long-term use.

Sustainable development is now a key factor in the global economy. Sustainable development is a process that leads to the satisfaction of the current needs of people and at the same time goes towards further development without destroying and limiting the possibilities of meeting the needs of future generations. Therefore, joint efforts should be made as soon as possible to build a sustainable and safe future for all people and the planet as a whole. Therefore, it is important to promote and support sustainable development by managing natural resources and ecosystems and the entire environment including people. The presented research was done on-site in African and European countries (Egypt, Ethiopia, Guinea, Turkey, and Poland) to determine their level of sustainable development. The level of sustainable development was determined by selected indicators from the Human Development Index. In this study, the authors used basic methods of social and economic research as follows: (1) market observation, (2) primary research on-site and (3) secondary research and the use of statistical analysis (Pearson Correlation). These methods were used to define the social and scientific problems and identify factors that affected a country's sustainable development. The main scientific problem, addressed by the study was undertaken in order to help facilitate a outcome on the energy, food and agricultural sectors connected with climate change and environmental law. It was found that there is an extremely strong positive correlation (from 0.8 to 1.0), and a very strong negative correlation (from -0.8 to -1.0) between the levels of a country’s age share, CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, and natural resources depletion.
