Water-dispersible nanospheres of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers and their application for mimicking light-harvesting systems

Abstract: Water-dispersible nanospheres of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers have been prepared for the first time by using the miniemulsion method. Nanospheres containing chromophores with high fluorescence quantum yields were fabricated to mimic the natural light-harvesting system.

“…Thus, no hints for intermolecular interactions of the two Pt II units in the ground state can be inferred from the absorption spectra of the nanoparticles. [7a, 16, 19] It was established in our previous study [15] that supramolecular polymerization by dimerization of UPy moieties through quadruple hydrogen bondingi saprerequisite for the formation of nanoparticles. [14b] In contrast to the absorption, the emission of Pt-bisUPy nanoparticles is quite different from that of Pt-bisUPy as either am onomer or supramolecular polymer in solution.…”

“…Interestingly, supramolecular polymers derived from 2 / 3 a are prone to form nano‐spheres via the mini‐emulsion method . In detail, a 1 : 2 mixture of 2 and 3 a in CHCl 3 (100 μL, 2 : 15 mM) was injected into an aqueous solution of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by ultrasonication for 30 min.…”

“…Their mild reaction conditions and high yields have boosted developments of Bis‐UPy based supramolecular polymers in areas such as biomaterials, smart materials and light‐emitting devices 2. 3 Unfortunately, diamines containing functional groups are not usually available and need to be prepared by multistep synthesis, such as by the introduction and reduction of nitro2a or azide3f groups under harsh reaction conditions. Protection and deprotection of amino groups are also necessary for storage or further molecular functionality due to its high reactivity.…”
