Water-dispersible ascorbic-acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles for contrast enhancement in MRI

Abstract: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles of size *5 nm surface functionalized with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) form a stable dispersion in water with a hydrodynamic size of *30 nm. The anti-oxidant property of ascorbic acid is retained after capping, as evidenced from the capability of converting methylene blue to its reduced leuco form. NMR relaxivity studies show that the ascorbic-acid-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide aqueous nanofluid is suitable as a contrast enhancement agent for MRI applications, coup… Show more

“…In one study, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were coated and further functionalised by using ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to form a stable dispersion for medical application. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) image of the coated nanoparticles revealed that particles were spherical in shape with an average particle size of 5 nm [13]. …”

“…1d, pure VC has characteristic peaks at the range 3215-3520 cm À1 corresponding to different hydroxyl groups, absorption bands at 1750 cm À1 related to the stretching vibrations of the C=O of the five membered lactone ring, and 1665 cm À1 which corresponds to the C=C stretching band. 32 In the CA spectrum (Fig. 1e), the presence of band at 3300 and 2940 cm À1 are due to the non-dissociated OH groups of CA and CH 2 stretching group.…”
