Water balance and soil erosion in the Brazilian Cerrado

Abstract: Deforestation of the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) region has caused major changes in hydrological processes. These changes in water balance and soil erosion are still poorly understood, but are important for making land management decisions in this region. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the magnitudes of hydrological processes and soil erosion changes on local, regional and continental scales, and the consequences that are generated. The main objective of the study presented in this doctoral thesis wa… Show more

“…Little is known about how the loss of soil, nutrients, and agricultural productivity has changed over the years in the Cerrado [32][33][34][35][36][37]. Some studies of soil loss have been made on the medium to small scale or in plots [32,33,[35][36][37]; however, they do not give an overview of degraded soils in a large ecosystem scale or point out the main activities that cause soil degradation. Studies which consider a geospatial analysis, including applications using GIS, remote sensing, and the RUSLE model are sparse and cover limited areas within the Cerrado.…”
