“…Similar modified silicas were described in details elsewhere [35,55,56]. The amounts of grafted TMS groups for chosen series of modified silicas (Table 1, C TMS ) correspond to 30-50% of initial content of surface SiOH groups; i.e., significant amounts of silanols remain.…”

“…The value obtained from our data is, nonetheless, within the range obtained for similar materials. For example, Takei et al [55] obtained a w value near 400 for a porous silica glass from BET measurements at 0°C, which corresponds to an E A -E L value of 13.6 kJ/mol, and Puibasset and Pellenq [56,57] obtained model E A values for Vycor glass that begin at 78 kJ/mole for the initial hydration increments. Several studies of water adsorption on silica gel at temperatures just above room temperature [58][59][60][61] yield E A À E L values from near zero to about 5.5 kJ/mol.…”

“…Their higher surface areas indicate the hydrophilic surface of stevensite, in which the interlayer ions and silanol groups at the edges of the silicate sheets interacted with water molecules. Their S W /S N ratios, estimating the degree of surface hydrophobicity [24], were evaluated in order to investigate the changes in the surface properties before and after the treatment. The S W /S N ratios were calculated as 2.1 and 1.9 for ST and SCF-ST (0.1), respectively.…”
