Watchers, Watched, and Watching in the Digital Age: Reconceptualization of Information Technology Monitoring as Complex Action Nets

Abstract: Despite increasing studies of information technology (IT) monitoring, our understanding of how IT-mediates relations between the watcher and watched remains limited in two areas. First, either traditional actor-centric frameworks assuming predefined watcher-watched relationships (e.g., panopticon or synopticon) are adopted or monitoring actors are removed to focus on data flows (e.g., dataveillance, assemblages, panspectron). Second, IT monitoring research predominantly assumes IT artifacts to be stable, bound… Show more

“…Our conjecture, which invites further research, is that elements of hegemonic totalism are widespread. To take one instance, surveillance technologies are becoming more deeply embedded in work organizations, and have the potential to extend digital monitoring beyond what was imaginable only a few years ago (Delanti, 2021; Zorina, Bélanger, Kumar, & Clegg, 2021). Theranos illustrates how intense surveillance can entrench the position of senior executives by protecting their claims from scrutiny.…”

“…These competing effects require further exploration, and we assessed the effect of two possible explanations as to why identifiability has the effect of suppressing judgment expression. One explanation is that when the act of public expression requires disclosure of one's personal details the evaluator may fear that this information may be misused (Zorina et al 2021). An alternative explanation, based on the notion of signaling conformance to norms as a means to gain social approval (Centola 2011), is that evaluators in the passive evaluative mode could feel uncertain about their judgment and are likely to feel vulnerable to criticism by those who have taken more time to consider the issues thoroughly.…”

“…We see much potential in further analysing how digital technologies can impact control‐trust dynamics by changing the way information is shared and managed. Recent research has started to analyse the impact of the so‐called ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ on trust (e.g., Lumineau et al, 2023; van der Werff et al, 2021) and control (e.g., Kellogg et al, 2020; Schafheitle et al, 2020; Zorina et al, 2021), but little has been done at the intersection of control and trust specifically. The adoption of digital technologies can allow for greater transparency, collaboration and information sharing among employees, improving communication and potentially increasing trust among employees.…”
