Wastewater Treatment Costs: A Research Overview through Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Given the problem of water scarcity and the importance of this resource for the sustainability of the planet, wastewater treatment and its costs have become a key issue for proper water management. Using bibliometric analysis of publications in the Web of Science database, this study presents an overview of the research on wastewater treatment costs in the period 1950–2020. The worldwide search returned 22,788 articles for wastewater treatment costs, which compares poorly to the results for research on wastewa… Show more

“…The quartile number (Q) in which the journal is positioned in a specific field and the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) index, which defines the quality and/or prestige of the journal according to the number of citations of the papers, were also determined [ 88 ]. Finally, the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) was determined; it measures the frequency with which the average number of articles in each journal has been cited during the previous two years [ 89 ].…”

“…Bibliometrics is a statistical analysis tool of publication that provides quantitative awareness into academic literature [36]. The bibliometric analysis technique has also been used to study areas such as wastewater treatment costs [37]; sustainable and responsible tourism (SRT) [38], and Reverse logistics with a focus on collection systems [39]. Co-word analysis, devised in the late 1970s [40] as an essential bibliometric technique, can detect the most important themes, explore hot-spots and identify knowledge gaps in research.…”

“…The detailed cost and profitability analysis including the capital cost and operating cost is out of the scope of this study. Due to the large variations and conditions in different plants, it is quite challenging to compare the cost of different wastewater treatment plants [93].…”
