Wastewater Refinery: Producing Multiple Valuable Outputs from Wastewater

Abstract: A wastewater refinery is a multifunctional solution that combines different technologies and processing schemes to recover a spectrum of valuable materials from municipal or industrial wastewater. The concept of wastewater refinery introduces a new perspective on wastewater treatment and management. It aims at making the most of wastewater constituents by co-producing different worthful outputs, such as water, energy, nitrogen, sulfide, and phosphorous. This can turn the treatment of wastewater from a major co… Show more

“…100 Wastewater may also contain valuable chemicals that need to be separated for further use or value addition. 101 Though, the water contents on the earth's surface are more than 70%, but less than 1% is useful for human consumption as the rest of the water contains several hazardous chemicals such as heavy metals, hydrocarbons, radionuclides, pathogenic bacteria, and viruses. 102 Organic hydrocarbons and heavy metals present in wastewater are a serious environmental problem as these cannot be removed by conventional techniques due to their very small molecular size.…”

“…When the biomass is derived via water treatment and reclamation process plant, it is called wastewater biorefinery. Important considerations during the setting up of wastewater biorefinery include the composition and complexities of the wastewater and the market assessment for the co-products recovered from the refinery [49]. For example, the baker's yeast wastewater or the vinasse has a very high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of 29,000 mg/l with acidic pH of 4-5 is a cost-effective substrate for fermentation growth of the protein rich filamentous fungi which is subsequently grown with suitable bacteria for further breakdown of organic nutrients via anaerobic digestion.…”
