Wastewater Collection Systems

Abstract: This chapter presents a review of the literature published in 2017 on topics relating to wastewater collection systems. It presents noteworthy advances in research and industry experiences selected from major literature sources. This review is divided into the following sections: sewer system planning; asset management/ condition assessment/ sewer rehabilitation; pump stations/ force mains/ system design; operations/ maintenance/ optimization/ intelligent sewer platforms; tunnel systems; and regulatory issues/… Show more

“…Biosensors are highly sensitive and selective tools for the analysis of sewage biomarkers due to their ease-of-use, low cost, and rapid analysis. [ 2 ] These small devices utilize biochemical reactions mediated by a biological receptor recognition element, such as nucleic acids, antibodies, enzymes, and microorganisms, to detect targets based on optical, electrical, and thermal signals [ 74 ]. Traditional collection methods requiring on-site data acquisition are labor intensive.…”

“…The first wastewater treatment plant to develop chemical precipitation was in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1890. Modern-day closed sanitary sewers are composed of elaborate underground pipes or tunnel systems for transporting sewage from houses and buildings to wastewater treatment facilities [ 2 ]. Sanitary sewers are part of an overall system called a sewage system or sewerage.…”

“…Sewer system design has several aspects to be considered (Vallabhaneni, 2017(Vallabhaneni, , 2018) that among those, cost optimization of sewer system design (Brand & Ostfeld, 2011;Rep, Kompare, Rosˇ, & Kravanja, 2008) and sedimentation (Camp, 1946;Walski, Edwards, Helfer, & Whitman, 2009) have attracted interest of many researchers. Self-cleansing design of sewer systems is a reliable way for solving the sedimentation problems.…”
