Waste use as substrate to yield guava seedlings

Abstract: The guava tree (Psidium guajava L.), considered a rustic plant, can be found growing naturally in low-fertility soils. However, when commercially cultivated it needs considerable amounts of fertilizers and soil correctives to attain good yields. These special measures for cultivation start with choice of a suitable substrate to grow good-quality seedlings, allowing them to reach their full productive potential. The aim of this work was to study the effect of different substrates (S 1 -soil, S 2 -vermiculite+so… Show more

“…After considering the genetic characteristics of the cultivar and seed quality, the choice of the substrate is the main step, as it is the input that is directly linked to the final quality of seedlings, with effects on commercial yield (Oliveira & Panno, 2011). The substrate must be pathogen-free and have chemical and physical composition, capable of providing water, air and nutrients that enable rapid germination/emergence and seedling development (Salvador et al, 2013).…”

“…The use of substrates as a technique of plant cultivation began in the 1930s; however, the interest in systems that use different substrates has only increased in recent years (ARRUDA et al, 2007;SALVADOR et al, 2013;PISSINATI et al, 2018). This technique of seedling cultivation has gained diffusion because it allows better utilization of nutrients, higher glue index, and better quality of seedlings.…”

“…Thus, sewage sludge must meet the necessary requirements for the concentration of heavy metals and pathogens, according to the legal norms which determine the limit of metal concentrations, the maximum cumulative loads permitted for use in agricultural soils, presence of pathogens and the species for which its use is recommended (Brasil, 2006). Salvador et al (2013), working with the waste use substrate to yield guava seedlings, observed that the treatment containing sewage sludge presented a negative effect on the growth of the plants.…”
