Increasing waste production is a serious problem for every country with substantial waste management initiatives. This challenge can be addressed by establishing waste reduction as a strategic policy. To this end, a project prioritizing community-based composting was implemented in Vietnam’s Thua Thien Hue province. The project mandated that the actors involved (i.e., local authorities, assistance groups, and residents) separate out organic waste for composting. To understand more fully how this policy could be implemented more successfully, first, the present study examined the links between local authorities’ support, groups providing assistance to residents during initiatives, and the project’s outcomes. Second, the research focused on the autonomous motivations influencing this project. These two points made our study novel. A case study design was applied based on self-determination theory and an adapted institutional analysis and development framework. Content analyses of qualitative and secondary data were conducted to examine the framework’s relevant components. Focusing on the psychological states approach, results showed that autonomous motivation was the main driver of waste separation and was activated by the local authorities’ autonomy support, deployed via an assistance group consisting of a waste collector and village leader, as well as other community attributes. These factors therefore affected the project’s outcomes. The research demonstrates the need to advocate local authorities’ autonomy support and residents’ autonomous motivation for waste separation.

Relation between Distances, Malodor Perceptions and Respiratory Problems in Cipayung Landfill

The waste which enters Cipayung landfill is 800 tons/day and the height of the waste heap reaches 30 meters. This study aims to investigate the perceptions of people living near the landfill regarding respiratory problems and malodor complaints which come from the landfill and to identify the relationship between home distance from landfill with malodor complaints and respiratory problems. This research uses primary data using a questionnaire consisting of 3 parts, including general characteristics of respondents, malodor perceptions, and respiratory problems. The sample is 100 people who live in Hamlet 07, Cipayung Urban Village. All respondents (100%) smell foul of the landfill, with the majority saying that the smell disturbs daily activities (70%) and causes unhealthy effects (75%). Majority of respondents (81%) had suffered respiratory problems during living near the landfill. And the most frequent symptom of respiratory problems in the last 2 weeks was coughing (25%). There are significancies of relation between distances and malodor perceptions (p-value 0.015), and relation between distances and respiratory problems (0.038) If malodor coming from the Cipayung landfill left untreated it will have more serious long-term effects. So it needs amelioration of processing system and other efforts by the stakeholders in order to decrease the risk of health and environment problems caused by H2S from Cipayung Landfill.

The suitable framework will enable schools to perform Adiwiyata in the best way based on their local potentials. The aim of this research was to get better knowledge about the conditions of schools awardedAdiwiyataas well as to analyze the specific strategies to create sustainabledevelopment of those Adiwiyata schools in Sintang district. This qualitative descriptive researchusedpurposive sampling technique in which the participants were SDN 7 Sintang, SMPN 3 Sungai Tebelian, and MTsN Sintang. The data was collected through questionnaire, in-depth interview, and field observation. The data gained were analized using SWOT. The results indicated that the all Adiwiyata schools achieved outstanding scores (73.15 for SDN 7 Sintang,70.40 for SMPN 3 Sungai Tebelian, and 68.13 forMTsN Sintang). Based on the SWOT analysis, the specific strategies to develop Adiwiyata schools in Sintang district were by utilizing of local unique including planting local plants, developing local culture and tradition on mutual collaboration with surrounding community, and increasing partnership with environmental agencies and the other third parties in building human resources who were reliable in maintaining environmental school program.The suitable framework will enable schools to perform Adiwiyata in the best way based on their local potentials.
