Ghana is currently facing a waste crisis that presents considerable risks to its environment, economy, and public health. This investigation evaluates four prospective waste-to-energy options—namely, incineration, anaerobic digestion, gasification, and landfill gas—with the objective of mapping out a sustainable strategy for efficient waste management. Among these solutions, anaerobic digestion stands out as a superior option, offering renewable energy production, valuable bio-product creation, and a comparatively lower greenhouse gas emission effect. A cost analysis further reveals that utilizing biogas from anaerobic digestion is not only environmentally friendly but also economically more viable than relying on light crude oil. Producing 200 MW of energy using biogas costs 36% less, potentially resulting in monthly savings of USD 5.46 million for Ghana. However, several obstacles impede the development of WtE. Inaccurate waste data and a lack of clear policies on waste-to-energy hinder the harnessing of Ghana’s WtE potential. To address this, the study recommends (1) implementing a well-defined national strategy complete with regulations and incentives to attract investments and (2) conducting specialized research to optimize WtE technologies for Ghana’s unique waste composition and context. By surmounting these challenges, Ghana stands poised to secure a sustainable future, simultaneously meeting the targets of Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 11. This entails ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all (SDG 7) and fostering inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and human settlements (SDG 11).

In the face of the detrimental effect from the abundant waste, humans were left with no choice but to cycle them. Waste sorting, an important step to maximize the recyclables resources, is essential to be performed. To reinforce the waste sorting behavior, this study observed the impact of verbal prompt intervention. The experiment was done at a higher education institution, Indonesia International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L), that integrates sustainability education into their curriculum. This study observed convenient sampling of one group, pre- and post- intervention. Volunteers stand by and notify wrong waste generators for one hour in the communal cafeteria for one month, after one week of baseline observation. The observation revealed a sufficient number of knowledge on waste sorting on the pre-intervention baseline (75%). The presence of the prolonged intervention increased the number of correct waste sorting to 89.68% in the fourth week of intervention. Nonetheless, a survey conducted to confirm the cause of change, disclosed that the community’s heightened proper waste behavior is independent of the direct reminder, but rather due to the presence of the notifying volunteer. Therefore the root of waste segregation behavior improvement was more than just from verbal reminder, but from the presence of the rangers that enforces the rules.

The study presented in this article focuses on the role of a smart waste bin (waste container) designed for waste management and explores what types of interventions people consider more appropriate in promoting environmentally responsible behaviour—based on norms or on an individual’s emotions. The smart waste bin development process was people-centred and paid particular attention to human experiences, allowing for various interaction modalities. By incorporating various sensors for waste volume and weight measurement in conjunction with presence and user identification capabilities, the experience was personalised. User feedback was collected by an extensive survey, consisting of four systematic sections, where values, attitudes, norms, perceived behavioural control, behavioural intention and actual behaviour were examined. The survey was completed by 194 respondents. The results showed that participants at the declarative level show a high level of environmental awareness and are very much willing to handle waste appropriately. Additionally, the results of the R&D process indicated that relatively cheap and efficient technological solutions can be developed to support waste management and sustainable lifestyles if the human-centred approach is taken into account.
