Waste management and bioenergy recovery from açaí processing in the Brazilian Amazonian region: a perspective for a circular economy

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the Brazilian production of açaí, focusing on its waste generation and addressing mass and energy balances arising from its cultivation, extraction, processing, and waste disposal. A new technological route for açaíʼs waste management was introduced for bioenergy recovery based on the circular economy concept. In 2018, Brazil produced 1.7 million tons of açaí fruit for an income of 1.07 billion USD, and the associated waste generation (seeds) was estimated at 85%. Due to the high pr… Show more

“…The development of a new management system, annexed to a biorefinery, could be an essential strategy to minimize environmental, social, and economic problems. 9 Based on the bibliometric search, the studies related to the production of value-added products from BSG were therefore selected. A general scheme to propose a biorefinery to the valorization of BSG was performed (Fig.…”

“…Underdeveloped countries do not have good management policies to prevent the burning of residues, open‐air waste disposal, and landfill disposal, which are unsuitable for reducing environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions. The development of a new management system, annexed to a biorefinery, could be an essential strategy to minimize environmental, social, and economic problems 9 . Based on the bibliometric search, the studies related to the production of value‐added products from BSG were therefore selected.…”

“…However, the current analysis in this paper is mainly based on qualitative analysis of social factors, such as qualitative analysis of the influence of various stakeholders, analysis and prospects of the development status, and prospects of bioenergy based on multilevel perspective theory. It has not established a quantitative investigation and research system based on economic and environmental factors, such as economic benefit analysis and environmental benefit analysis of the bioenergy industry [53][54][55]. If the social, economic, and environmental benefits are comprehensively and quantitatively analysed, the development of bioenergy will be presented more clearly, scientifically, and comprehensively, identifying the development trend of bioenergy and formulate strategies for bioenergy development and energy transition.…”

“…In contrast, anaerobic digestion (AD), a well‐known and commercially available technology, could also be adopted for açaí’s solid waste treatment (including wastewater) as a strategy for a more environmentally friendly route while producing green energy (biogas) 70 . In comparison with other waste energy recovery technologies, AD has some advantages, such as quick installation, easy operation, low investment costs, and good profitability indicators 71–73 .…”
