Was improvement of spinach growth by nano-TiO2 treatment related to the changes of Rubisco activase?

Abstract: Characterized by a photo-catalysis property, nano-anatase TiO(2) is closely related to photosynthesis of spinach. It could not only improve light absorbance, transformation from light energy to electron energy and active chemical energy, but also promote the activity of Rubiso activase of spinach. However, the relation between the activity of Rubiso activase and the growth of spinach promoted by nano-anatase TiO(2) treatment remains largely unclear. In this study, we find that the amount and the activity of Ru… Show more

“…Great increase of the electron transfer, oxygen evolution, and photophosphorylation was observed also in chloroplasts from nanoanatase-TiO 2 -treated spinach under visible light and ultraviolet light illumination [72]. Biomass accumulation of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) by TiO 2 NPs (by 60%) was also observed by Gao et al [73]. The activity of Rubisco in the nano-anatase-treated spinach was significantly higher than the control, by up to 2.33 times, and bulk TiO 2 treatment had no such significant effects.…”

“…However, it could also be a side effect of the dissolution of the smaller NPs that would make then occur faster than the larger, non-coated NPs. The dissolution of NPs has been observed in other NPs-plant systems [7].…”

“…29,2010had little-to-no effect and, in some cases, have shown a positive effect on root and shoot elongation. In contrast, TiO 2 and ZnO NPs have been shown to have both negative and positive effects on the growth of plants, which were determined to be concentration dependent [6][7][8]29]. Thus, it is not surprising that the Ni(OH) 2 NPs were observed within mesquite plants.…”

“…Our data suggest that chlorophyll may be associated with growth, but that other factors could also be important. One of the explanations for this observation is that TiO 2 NPs probably enhanced rate of light independent reactions of photosynthesis, since these NPs can significantly promote Rubisco activase activity and its mRNA expression (Ma et al, 2008;Gao et al, 2008). Rubisco activase plays an important role in the regulation of photosynthesis and overexpression of this enzyme increased CO 2 assimilation (Yamori et al, 2012).…”
