Abstract. In this paper, it will be shown how information and communication technologies (ICT) act as enablers to realize changeable production systems within the German machinery and equipment industry. A cybernetic structure is proposed to design and operate systems that have to cope with a high degree of complexity due to continuously changing environment conditions. The integration of IT-Systems along the order processing of small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SME) is shown to be one of the missing links of changeable production systems in practice. A demonstration case is presented in which standardized interfaces of IT-Systems enhance real-time data exchange between the relevant planning levels of producing companies, their suppliers and customers.

Selecting the most suitable work equipment is a key factor in creating the value of products; therefore, the design and selection of work equipment are increasingly focused on its adaptability The adaptability of work equipment with regards to flexibility and responsiveness is defined by its universality, mobility, modularity compatibility and economy This articie presents a methodology of evaluating the adaptabiiity of work equipment and a procedure for seiecting work equipment with the maximum adaptabiiity index (i.e. the optimai one) from a group of avaiiable work equipment The results of designing and weighing the criteria of the target tree are presented, as well as the results of coarse and fine selection of the optimal CNC lathe, considering its expected adaptability
