WAMS-Based SSR Damping Controller Design for FACTS Devices and Investigating Effects of Communication Delays

Abstract: Recent technological progresses in the wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) are realizing the centralized controls as a breakthrough for improving the power systems stability. The most challenging deficiency against WAMS technology is related to communication delays. If this latency is neglected, it can deteriorate the damping performance of closed loop control or even degrade the system stability. This paper investigates a conventional Wide Area Damping Controller (WADC) for a static synchronous series compen… Show more

“…1173 control, in addition to the FACTS device main control, can greatly improve system damping [6]- [8] and can also improve system voltage profile, which is advantageous over PSSs. Besides many merits which are provided with FACTS devices, they are suffering from high initial costs, device complexity and low reliability of these devices which means if a single point of failure occurs in a system, the system will be entirely shut down.…”

“…[7] a phase imbalance scheme for stabilizing torsional oscillationsa have been proposed or in [8] a WAMS based SSR damping controller is proposed for FACTS devices to SSR mitigation. In [9] a novel control strategy have been proposed based on increasing the network damping at critical frequencies of the generator shaft.…”

“…An auxiliary supplementary controller is required to damp the torsional oscillations. The design of subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) for FACTS controllers is reported in [4][5][6][7][8][9]. The efficacy of integrating energy storage devices like a battery, fuel cell, supercapacitor etc., to the dc link of STATCOM in enhancing the performance of STATCOM is demonstrated in [10][11][12].…”
