The quantum theory of dispersion was an important conceptual advancement which led out of the crisis of the old quantum theory in the early 1920s and aided in the formulation of matrix mechanics in 1925. The theory of Charles Galton Darwin, often cited only for its reliance on the statistical conservation of energy, was a wave-based attempt to explain dispersion phenomena at a time between the theories of Ladenburg and Kramers. It contributed to future successes in quantum theory, such as the virtual oscillator, while revealing through its own shortcomings the limitations of the wave theory of light in the interaction of light and matter. After its publication, Darwin’s theory was widely discussed amongst his colleagues as the competing interpretation to Compton’s in X-ray scattering experiments. It also had a pronounced influence on John C. Slater, whose ideas formed the basis of the BKS theory.

Bruno Rossi is considered one of the fathers of modern physics, being also a pioneer in virtually every aspect of what is today called high-energy astrophysics. At the beginning of 1930s he was the pioneer of cosmic ray research in Italy, and, as one of the leading actors in the study of the nature and behavior of the cosmic radiation, he witnessed the birth of particle physics and was one of the main investigators in this fields for many years. While cosmic ray physics moved more and more towards astrophysics, Rossi continued to be one of the inspirers of this line of research. When outer space became a reality, he did not hesitate to leap into this new scientific dimension. Rossi's intuition on the importance of exploiting new technological windows to look at the universe with new eyes, is a fundamental key to understand the profound unity which guided his scientific research path up to its culminating moments at the beginning of 1960s, when his group at MIT performed the first in situ measurements of the density, speed and direction of the solar wind at the boundary of Earth's magnetosphere, and when he promoted the search for extra-solar sources of X rays. A visionary idea which eventually led to the breakthrough experiment which discovered Scorpius X-1 in 1962, and inaugurated X-ray astronomy.

Nesse artigo celebraremos o Ano Internacional da Luz contando uma história sobre o conceito de fóton ao longo do Século XX. Pode-se pensar que o conceito de fóton tornou-se bem estabelecido na física logo após da década de 1930. Contudo, destacaremos que desenvolvimentos teóricos e experimentais culminaram, após a década de 1950, na revisão do conceito canônico de fóton da velha teoria quântica. Na óptica quântica, o fóton não é mais representado pela imagem de partícula individual, mas por uma ferramenta matemática que descreve uma excitação de um estado quântico. Esse artigo dedica-se a revelar os caminhos que levaram a um conceito de fóton mais sofisticado, passando pelo efeito HBT, os estados coerentes de Glauber, e os experimentos que trouxeram à tona a natureza quântica da luz.
