Walls are thin 1 (WAT1), an Arabidopsis homolog of Medicago truncatula NODULIN21, is a tonoplast-localized protein required for secondary wall formation in fibers

Abstract: SUMMARYBy combining Zinnia elegans in vitro tracheary element genomics with reverse genetics in Arabidopsis, we have identified a new upstream component of secondary wall formation in xylary and interfascicular fibers. Walls are thin 1 (WAT1), an Arabidopsis thaliana homolog of Medicago truncatula NODULIN 21 (MtN21), encodes a plant-specific, predicted integral membrane protein, and is a member of the plant drug/metabolite exporter (P-DME) family (transporter classification number: TC 2.A.7.3). Although WAT1 i… Show more

“…MtN3 and MtN21 also have recently been shown to be crucial for exine pattern formation and cell integrity of microspores (Guan et al, 2008) and secondary wall formation in xylary and cotton fibers (Ranocha et al, 2010), respectively. These genes code for transmembrane proteins involved in the cell wall development of specialized plant cells that require stringent impermeability to specific substances (e.g.…”

“…SIAR1 (At1g44800) belongs to group IIIa and has two closely related paralogs in Arabidopsis that are encoded by At1g21890 and At4g08300, but there are no direct orthologs in rice. WAT1 (At1g75500), the first described member of the family (Ranocha et al, 2010), is a distant homolog of SIAR1 and belongs to group V in the phylogram.…”

“…Mounting genetic proof has characterized these NAC TFs as "master switches" for secondary wall formation in Arabidopsis (Kubo et al, 2005;Zhong et al, 2006Zhong et al, , 2007bYamaguchi et al, 2008). Although WALLS ARE THIN1 (WAT1) might be a regulator of SND1 and NST1 in fiber cells (Ranocha et al, 2010), the upstream signals for secondary wall cellulose synthesis regulation remain largely unknown.…”
