Walleye pollock recruitment in Shelikof Strait: applied fisheries oceanography

Abstract: Fisheries‐Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (FOCI) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research programme seeking to understand recruitment processes of commercially exploited Alaskan fishes. The FOCI is mainly comprised of scientists at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and the Alaska Fisheries Science Center who study both the biotic and abiotic environment, including processes within larval patches through integrated field, laboratory, and modelling studies. The initi… Show more

“…The benefits of vertically structured aggregations of food particles for larval survival were highlighted by Lasker (1975), such vertical structuring of the plankton being related to wind mixing and water column stability (e.g. Peterman & Bradford 1987, Kendall et al 1996, Lagadeuc et al 1997. Wind mixing also affects larval feeding through its influence on predator/prey contact rates (Dower et al 1997, Sundby 1997) and consequent larval feeding success (Rothschild & Osborn 1988).…”

“…To our knowledge, only a few attempts have been made to follow this approach (e.g. Pacific salmon: Larkin and Hourston, 1964; walleye pollock in Shelikof Strait: Kendall et al, 1996; North Sea plaice: Beverton and Iles, 1992). A large amount of multi-disciplinary information is required and in almost all cases, including the Baltic, the major problems are lack of time series data on key processes and the variety and complexity of processes involved.…”
