Abstract: The article provides data on the catch of the Northern Okhotsk, Eastern Kamchatka and Western Bering Sea walleye pollock stocks, fishery structure by the fishing gears in 2016–2019, size and age composition of the fish in the commercial trawl and Danish seine catches in 2010–2019. On example of walleye pollock at East Kamchatka, one of possible approaches is considered to assess the state of stocks for marine commercial species with usage of the data on age structure in catches. Algorithms for suboptimal filtering and interpolation (extended Kalman smoother and unscented Kalman smoother) are presented for a cohort model of an exploited stock, in presence of uncertainty about true value of the vector of the system parameters.

A new approach for assessment of the spawning stock of walleye pollock in the northern Okhotsk Sea on the data of ichthyoplankton surveys is proposed. To estimate the actual number of spawned eggs, average age of eggs at each stage of development was determined and the eggs mortality was estimated in dependence on age. For the spring ichthyoplankton surveys in 2019–2023, the eggs mortality was evaluated as 27 % for stage I, 57 % for the stage II, 74 % for the stage III, and 86 % for the stage IV – these portions of the spawned eggs were not caught and counted. So, the number of counted eggs was in 1.7–2.1 times lower that the actual number of spawned eggs. The spawning stock biomass was amounted as 12.9 . 106 t in 2019–2023, on average, on the base of the actual number of eggs determined taking unto account the eggs mortality (while the biomass calculated from the counted number of eggs only would be 6.9 . 106 t). Results of the spawning stock estimation with this new method are comparable with the stock assessments by trawl surveys. The eggs number correction through mortality is recommended for calculation of the spawning stock for walleye pollock in the Okhotsk Sea using the ichthyoplankton method.

The data on the biology and fishing of pollock in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk collected during its monitoring on fishing vessels in the winter-spring period 2001–2021 are analyzed. Analysis of the dislocation of the fishing fleet makes it possible to trace the formation and distribution of pollock clusters. A significant amount of the collected material made it possible to characterize the dynamics of gonad maturation and the change in the size and age structure of individuals in commercial subzones. Pollock fishing usually began in the Kamchatka-Kuril subzone and partly in the North Okhotsk subzone in the area of the Swan Upland, with gradual development northward into Shelikhov Bay, Pritaui district and the North Okhotsk shelf. The basis of the catches was pollock at the age of 5–8 years at the pre-spawning stages of the development of sexual products. By-catch of juveniles varied from 0,5% (2009) to 63,5% (2018), averaging 23,5% in the North Okhotsk subzone, 34,8% in the West Kamchatka subzone and 15,5% in the Kamchatka-Kuril subzone.
