Wake Wash of a Fast Small Boat in Restricted Waters: Model Tests and Full-Scale Measurements

Abstract: This paper presents the model testing of an 8.23m boat with hard chine planning hull generated waves at the Kilim recreational park. Wake is considered one of the main causes of riverbank erosion due to the energy carried by waves hitting the riverbank. Initially, ship particulars were measured from actual boats to generate a hull form using MAXSURF software. A lines plan was then generated to fabricate the model using fibreglass. Experiments were conducted in the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malay… Show more

“…The leading waves at the beginning of wave generation was excluded by a wave monitor, which was placed 25m away from the wave maker. A wave dissipation beach, with a slope of 15 degrees, was also arranged at the end of towing tank to eliminate the wave reflection effect [32,33]. The average measurement time for the model tests was about 3 minutes.…”

“…As a result, boat drivers must avoid sailing at crucial speeds. In addition, several previous investigations on ship-generated waves [15] and maneuverability characteristics [16] in shallow water and narrow channel can be reviewed.…”

“…Thus, the combination of towing tank experiments and certain extrapolation procedures is considered to be the most reliable method even though the scaling of the viscous forces represents the main issue [13]. Towing tank tests can be used for various assessments including manoeuvring [14], seakeeping [15], wave wake characteristics [16], roll damping [17], etc. Lately, a huge potential of accurate and reliable methods based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), as an alternative to towing tank experiments, has been proven for the prediction of ship resistance and eff ective power [18].…”
