This article argues that, to understand where to find the study object ‘Islam’ and how to address it, researchers in Islamic studies need to be theoretically and methodologically aware of the importance and implications of power practices. By discussing enunciations associated with Islam, the problems with reification, the importance of power, the cognitive power of naming, and the semiotic resources mobilised by enunciations, the article proposes ways to operationalise grand scale theories by Talal Asad and Michel Foucault, with an especial focus on the understanding of semiotic resources. It also provides an account of the personal journey of the author while trying to relate constructively to the field for the last 30 years.

“I am Satan!” black metal, Islam and blasphemy in Turkey and Saudi Arabia

During the last decade, black metal bands have recorded anti-Islamic music in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Black metal is renowned for being antiauthoritarian and especially against organized religion. As such, black metal music is a strong expression of protest against, and repudiation of, society, manifesting social pressure, and contrasting with the discursively normal. Using the results from two case studies -one on Turkey, the other on Saudi Arabiathis article argues that black metal expressions in the two countries must be perceived as subcultural expressions to the Islamic ideology of the respective states as well as the dominant culture in society at large. Further, we argue that a multimodal, semiotic reading of the bands' musical expressions opens up a field for Islamic studies seldom approached before.

Lexical Innovation in English Article Abstracts: Implication for the Teaching of Professional Genres in Islamic Studies

Abstract-English language teaching of professional genres relates with issues of language and of professional or disciplinary knowledge. The paper discusses these issues by studying the lexical resources in article abstracts as exemplars of professional genre to better understand how professional community use English in their professional practices. Using content-analysis, the paper collected data from 208 English article abstracts of international journals of Islamic studies in four-year publication. The findings demonstrate that the English article abstracts in the discipline contain some lexical innovation mainly in form of resemiotization of Arabic as the thematic language of the discipline and English as the academic language, and word formation comprising elements of both languages. This indicates that lexical innovation in abstracts functions as a tool for proper communication of the professional community in both academic and professional contexts. These findings imply that the teaching of professional genres, in particular that of English article abstract, should take into account linguistic skills and disciplinary knowledge of the professional community in both academic and professional contexts. The paper, thus, proposes some ways to develop students' ability in doing lexical innovation to better prepare their professional practice using professional genres in the future.
