Wagner's Classification as a Tool for Treating Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Our Observations at a Suburban Teaching Hospital

Abstract: The study aims to scale patients with diabetic foot ulcers according to Wagner's classification, measure the various risk factors, study various outcomes and improve the treatment measures. MethodologyThe article presents materials on a prospective observational study of 50 diabetic foot patients with different presentations who underwent stage-specific intervention. ResultsPoor glycemic control, lifestyle factors, and smoking showed increased risks for foot ulcer complications. Diabetic neuropathy and vasculo… Show more

“…Therefore, stratification of DFU patients and individualised treatment based on their Wagner's grade can reduce amputation rates and mortality. 19 Patients with delayed ulcer healing and larger ulcer lesions are at an increased risk for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, as indicated by our findings, which corroborate those of previous research. It was hypothesised that as duration of DFU increases, so does the Wagner grade, leading to a rise in severe and mixed wound infections.…”

“…25 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (19 males and 6 females) with DFU were recruited at our institution from July 2021 to May 2022. The inclusion and exclusion criteria are specified in Table 1, and only Wagner Classification [22] grades I to II were included in this study; Wagner grade I is superficial ulcer, and Wagner grade II is deep ulcer extending into the tendon, ligament, or bone, but no abscess. Patients with an ulcer of <2.5 cm in diameter on foot were included, [23,24] but patients with an ulcer area of lesser than 0.25 cm 2 were excluded.…”

“…All known diabetic patients with foot ulcers above 30 years of age with grade 1 (superficial, full-thickness ulcer limited to the dermis, not extending to the subcutis) and grade 2 (ulcers of the skin extending through the subcutis with exposed tendon or bone and without osteomyelitis or abscess formation) ulcers by Meggitt Wagner classification [ 12 ], and patients who were willing to take part in the study, were included in the study. Patients with grade 3 (deep ulcers with osteomyelitis or abscess formation), grade 4 (localized gangrene of toes to forefoot), and grade 5 (foot with extensive gangrene) ulcers by the Meggitt Wagner classification, patients with systemic diseases like ischemic heart disease, patients with venous ulcers, and critically ill patients were excluded from the study.…”
