W band vector millimeter‐wave signal generation based on a new photonic frequency quadrupling without optical filter

Abstract: In this study, we have proposed and verified a new frequency quadrupling scheme to achieve the generation of W band (75 G–110 G) vector millimeter‐wave signal (mm‐wave), in which optical filter is needless. To eliminate constellation overlapping of the generated vector mm‐wave signal caused by phase multiplication in the process of frequency multiplication, precoding assisted technique is adopted. Simulations are done to generate 80 GHz 16 phase‐shift keying (16PSK) modulated vector mm‐wave signals using a 20 … Show more

“…2 Many researchers have proposed many methods to generate high-frequency millimeters wave signals, such as optical injection locking, 3,4 optical phase-locked loop, 5 dual-wavelength laser, 6,7 nonlinear effects (such as fourwave mixing), 8,9 optoelectronic oscillator, [10][11][12] and external modulation. [13][14][15][16][17] Because the external modulation scheme has the advantages of high spectrum purity, wide tuning range, good stability, and low phase noise, it shows great potential in high-frequency signal generation. 18 The schemes of generating 16-tupling MMW without filtering mostly use high modulation index, which is a burden for electro-optic modulators.…”
