This paper deals with the topic that is in the Czech education seen in context with the notion of reading literacy and discussed with reference to the results provided by the international comparative survey of reading literacy PISA. The first part describes the concepts of reading competence and reading strategies and mentions selected approaches to their classification. The second part-from the perspective of the chosen topic-discusses the latest adjustments of the Framework educational program for basic education which will be valid in the school year 2016/2017.
