VVC In-Loop Filters

Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the technologies for in-loop processing and filtering in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. These processes comprise luma mapping with chroma scaling, deblocking filter, sample adaptive offset, adaptive loop filter and cross-component adaptive loop filter. They are qualified as "in-loop" because they are applied inside the encoding and decoding loops, before storing the pictures in the decoded picture buffer. The filters are complementary and address different purpose… Show more

“…Ground-truth labels are also provided for side-by-side illustration. We particularly use the VVC compressed image for qualitative comparison because a set of normative in-loop filters are enabled in VVC intra coding which promises outstanding subjective quality of decoded image [69]. As seen, the proposed method noticeably improves the subjective quality with more sharp textures and less noise.…”

“…Another case of processing latency for chroma components appears when the luma mapping with chroma scaling (LMCS) [33], [34] and the CTU dual tree are both applied. In this case, the decoded chroma residual is scaled by a particular factor.…”

“…The picture partitioning and the quantization steps used in VVC may cause coding artifacts such as block discontinuities, ringing artifacts, mosquito noise, or texture and edge smoothing. Four in-loop filters are thus defined in VVC to alleviate these artifacts and enhance the overall coding efficiency [26]. The VVC in-loop filters are deblocking filter (DBF), sample adaptive offset (SAO), adaptive loop filter (ALF) and crosscomponent adaptive loop filtering (CC-ALF).…”
