Abstract: The purpose of this study was to review the clinical course of patients diagnosed with vulvar melanoma. Charts of patients diagnosed between 1970 and 1997 were reviewed for demographics, lesion characteristics, disease duration and extent, and treatments. Actuarial survival curves were computed by the Kaplan Meier method and compared by Cox proportional hazards regressions. Fifty-one patients (median age 54) with vulvar melanoma presented with a vulvar mass (39%), pain (30%), bleeding (24%), and itching (20%).… Show more

“…Most frequent symptoms are bleeding, itching/burning, mass, miction disturbances, discharge, alterations in previously existing nevi, particularly increase in size and pigmentation, inguinal swelling, and pain. Most of the melanomas of the female genitalia are thick (>2 mm) at the time of diagnosis [17,35,36]. The reported 5-year survival rates range from 27 to 59% for vulvar primary tumors and from 13 to 33% for vaginal primary tumors [17,33,34,36,37].…”

“…Subsequently, four other studies including 17 cases of vulvar melanomas were published. 19,[22][23][24] The groin detection rate ranged from 83 to 100%. The sentinel lymph node procedure was introduced in our institution for cutaneous melanoma in 1998.…”
