Abstract:Aromatic aldehydes having hydroxyl substituent(s) react with urea (or thiourea), and ethyl acetoacetate (or acetylacetone) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid as catalyst and water as solvent to give substituted dihydropyrimidinones (Biginelli compounds) in good to excellent yields.
