VSL#3 Probiotic-Mixture Induces Remission in Patients with Active Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: Treatment of patients with mild to moderate UC, not responding to conventional therapy, with VSL#3 resulted in a combined induction of remission/response rate of 77% with no adverse events. At least some of the bacterial species incorporated in the probiotic product reached the target site in amounts that could be detected.

“…Selected probiotics have been shown to be effective for some gastrointestinal disorders in humans and domestic animals yet prevention of neonatal diarrhea has not been reported 27, 28. Further, successful probiotic studies have often involved inflammatory, not infectious, disorders,29, 30 raising questions of the potential efficacy of probiotics in foals given the pathophysiology of foal diarrhea. Recent advances in the knowledge of the equine intestinal microbiota could be used to design equine‐specific probiotics and further investigation of this area is required.…”

“…There is evidence that probiotic treatment is effective against UC [3][4][5][6] . We have previously shown that treatment with bifidobacteriafermented milk (BFM) containing live bifidobacteria is more effective than the usual treatment in inducing [7] and maintaining remission [8] of ulcerative colitis.…”

“…VSL#3 is a probiotic mixture of eight different bacterial strains that has demonstrated beneficial effects in several intestinal conditions. Controlled studies have shown VSL#3 to be efficacious for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and pouchitis (8,9), as well as in animal models of colitis (10,11). However, the precise mechanisms of action are not fully understood.…”
