The feeding mechanism of the oyster. II. On the gills and palps of Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea virginica and C. angulata

“…Here they are passed orad, toward the mouth, across the outer surfaces of the palps into a hollow brood sac formed in the anterior lobe of the oyster (Nelson,'46). Whether a similar circulation occurs with larvae of edulis and other species of Ostrea has not been determined, though the gelatinous matrix in which the embryos are imbedded as demonstrated by Coste (1861) renders this improbable. Female stage edulis bearing both "white s i c k (early) and "black s i c k (late) stages of larvae, dredged from the Oosterschelde in Holland with Dr. Korringa in 1953 showed no circulation of the young.…”

Linking phylogenetic similarity and pollution sensitivity to develop ecological assessment methods: a test with river diatoms
