Voxel-based analysis of the diffusion tensor

Abstract: The discrepancy among these results was not explained in full, but possible explanations were misregistration and smoothing for the SPM-based methods and insensitivity to FA changes outside the local centers of white matter bundles for TBSS-based method.

“…FreeSurfer also provides the labels and statistical analysis of the segmented subcortical structures (Abe et al, 2010;Fischl et al, 2002;Fischl et al, 2004). Figure 2 shows the seven FreeSurfersegment subcortical structures discussed herein: i.e., the cerebellum, thalamus, caudate, putamen, pallidum, hippocampus, and amygdala.…”

“…Significant results in boldface. et al, 2010;Barta & Dazzan, 2003;Ronan et al, 2006;Salat et al, 2004). When we adjust overall cortical surface area for ICV, males had modest but significantly greater surface area, particularly in the frontal lobe.…”

“…Two of the most common causes of false positive results are minor misregistrations between treated and control groups, and failure to correct for multiple comparisons. 48,49 In this study, we have taken a number of steps to ensure accurate registration including the use of: (1) high-resolution, high-SNR diffusion-weighted images, (2) an unbiased MDT registration strategy, and (3) registration software specifically optimized for small animal image data. To correct for any residual misregistrations, images were spatially smoothed with a three-voxel 3D Gaussian kernel consistent with general guidelines for voxelwise analysis.…”

“…In an effort to better understand the pathophysiology of MDD and develop more effective treatments, much research has focused on delineating the structure and function of this mood regulation network. Although many studies have focused on the function of the network (Drevets et al, 2008b;Hafeman et al, 2012;Mayberg, 2003a, b;Murray et al, 2011;Phillips, 2006), including functional connectivity between key brain regions (Craddock et al, , 2012Greicius, 2008Greicius, , 2007James et al, 2009;Seminowicz et al, 2004;Sheline et al, 2010), others have focused on the structural connectivity of the network, ie, the white matter (WM) pathways between brain regions (Abe et al, 2010;Blood et al, 2010;Cole et al, 2012;Cullen et al, 2010;Kieseppa et al, 2010;Korgaonkar et al, 2011;Ma et al, 2007;Tha et al, 2013;Wu et al, 2011;Zhu et al, 2011;Zou et al, 2008).…”

“…Numerous DTI studies have looked for WM integrity differences in patients with MDD (Abe et al, 2010;Blood et al, 2010;Cole et al, 2012;Cullen et al, 2010;Kieseppa et al, 2010;Korgaonkar et al, 2011;Ma et al, 2007;Tha et al, 2013;Wu et al, 2011;Zhu et al, 2011;Zou et al, 2008). However, the findings have been highly variable with respect to the location and direction of the difference in FA (Table 1).…”
