Vortex beams in turbulent media: review

Abstract: The review covers publications concerned with propagation of laser beams through turbulent media described by the Kolmogorov theory and generalizations thereof to describe signal transmission in optical communications and detection systems. In this case, the turbulent medium is interpreted as an optical channel with random parameters. Various optical signals considered include partially coherent beams, non-uniformly polarized vector beams, as well as specifically configured spatial laser beams. Special attenti… Show more

“…Changes have also taken place in the journal contentnew publication categories have appeared: Earth's Remote Sensing Technology, including development of hyperspectral equipment [6][7][8][9]; photonic-crystal sensors [10][11]; LED technology [12][13]; video signal stream processing and some other new methods of image subject processing [14][15][16][17][18]; new types of laser beams [19][20]; and academic reviews of up-to-date trends have been published [21][22]. In 2016, for the first time in a long period, a full-text English version of the journal of Computer Optics was issued with the articles originally written in English (Volume 40, Issue 5), which had not previously been published elsewhere.…”

“…It is important to notice the intensity moments J p:q are degenerate with respect to the sign of the vortex topological charge m in the case of axial symmetry of the modes in Eq. (12). To remove degeneracy of the intensity moments, it is important to change symmetry of singular beams, but without destroying of structure beams so that the vortex modes with opposite topological charges in sign have distinct geometric contours.…”

“…An important aspect of this problem is the study of biomedical objects [8,9], for example, the composition of the blood or the reflection of a vortex beam from the skin surface [10] for express diagnostics of skin diseases. The fact is that a vortex beam scattered by the skin is transformed into a speckle-like structure resembling one that occurs when light passes through a medium with weak turbulence [11,12]. At the same time, the speckle structure is formed by the skeleton of optical vortex array [13][14][15].…”
