This case study is a detailed assessment of the paranoid schizophrenia and right-wing extremist beliefs of Tobias Rathjen, who amalgamated three low-base rate events: mass homicide, matricide, and suicide. The offender killed nine individuals during a terrorist attack in Hanau, Germany, on February 19, 2020, before murdering his mother and taking his own life. A comprehensive qualitative analysis of primary and secondary sources was conducted, with raw materials consisting of three written documents and three recorded videos, all authored and disseminated by the perpetrator prior to his attack. Open-source data were predominantly composed of the postmortem forensic psychiatric evaluation of the assailant, as well as minor interpellations between the German government and parliamentary groups, and to a lesser extent printed and online articles. We structured the analysis with the Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol (TRAP-18) and found that Rathjen was positive for 94% of the TRAP-18 indicators. The motivations for his acts of violence were multifaceted, but his major psychiatric illness, paranoid schizophrenia with chronic delusions, was central in his progression to become a lone-actor terrorist. In addition to this internally formed psychotic-driven ideology, the perpetrator was influenced and inspired by external (i.e., online and offline) xenophobic and conspiratorial elements that gradually provided a secondary framework for his violent attack. The complex interplay of his delusions, obsessions, and extreme overvalued beliefs-which drove his fixation-reveal the difficulty of clinically understanding such a case, and also the necessity of doing so, to attempt to risk mitigate these types of subjects by threat assessment teams. Public Significance StatementThis postincident research applied a threat assessment instrument to the lone-actor terrorist Tobias Rathjen, who joined three statistically rare occurrences: mass homicide, matricide, and suicide. Ninety-four percent of the TRAP-18 warning behaviors were prevalent in this case, which was predominantly motivated by a severe mental disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, exacerbated by ideological and conspiratorial beliefs from the far-right cosmos.

This essay assesses the acrimonious debates about Holocaust memory that took place in Germany in 2020–2021 and that have come to be known as Historikerstreit 2.0. These debates call up older controversies, especially the 1986 Historikerstreit (Historians’ Debate) in which Jürgen Habermas took on conservative historians who sought to relativize the Nazi genocide. The Historikerstreit concerned the relation between Nazi and Stalinist crimes and the question of German responsibility for the Holocaust; today’s controversies involve instead the relation between colonialism and the Holocaust and racism and antisemitism as well as the ongoing crisis in Israel/Palestine. As the current debates reveal, the dominant Holocaust memory regime in Germany is based on an absolutist understanding of the Holocaust’s uniqueness and a rejection of multidirectional approaches to the genocide. While that memory regime represented a major societal accomplishment of the 1980s and 1990s, it has reached its limits in Germany’s “postmigrant” present. Yet, as an example of migrant engagement with the Holocaust illustrates, German society already includes alternative practices of memory that could transform the German model of coming to terms with the past in productive ways.

Dawnin Greece, to name only a few. At the same time, there has been a surge in racist, fascist, and antisemitic attacks within Europe. Since 1991, Neo-Nazi gangs have attacked migrants and members of antifascist groups, burned down housing facilities for asylum seekers (including facilities for Ukrainian refugees in 2022), disrupted social initiatives, and spread fear (BfV, 2022; cf. Speit, 2021). However, most of these activities were described as the criminal action of socially marginalized individuals, downplaying the organized structure behind these far-right activities and, thus, paving the way for more attacks. 1 Part of this paper is to show how the epistemic tools developed by the epistemology of ignorance literature can help to understand (a) why the organized structures of far-right movements are unintelligible within the dominant frame of intelligibility in Europe and (b) how the silence about far-right movements shifts the boundaries for what can be said or done, thus, having deeply problematic repercussions for who can feel safe in Europe. This paper has a modest aim: By bringing into focus contexts of social injustice that have not received much attention in the current literature and by understanding them with the help of existing research from the debate on problematic epistemic practices and philosophy of language, the paper aims to highlight some problematic practices. 2 In this paper, I want to concentrate on a series of attacks carried out in Germany. From 2000 to 2007, the National Socialist Underground (NSU) succeeded in murdering 10 people, one police officer, and nine migrants in Germany.
