Market-driven closures of coal mines have typically been associated with negative economic consequences for the affected regions. In Germany, structural policy directed towards ameliorating the negative effects of hard coal decline in the Ruhr area lagged behind the onset of decline, caused major political conflicts, and has been variously criticized for its reactive character that failed to generate a positive image of the future. The phase-out of lignite coal in Germany, in contrast, is policy-driven and accompanied from the outset by compensatory and investment policies that strive to facilitate regional structural change proactively. Against this backdrop, we investigate how the policies of lignite coal phase-out initiated in 2018 and the accompanying public discourse affect the economic worries of individuals in the remaining three lignite coal mining areas in Germany. We focus on the period 2016–2021, using a longitudinal multilevel design based on regional and individual data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). Overall, probabilities of strong economic worries decrease throughout the observed period. Results show that subjective economic worries do not significantly differ between residents of lignite mining regions and those in the rest of the country. Further robustness analyses confirm that the coal phase-out policy has not increased economic uncertainties in the populations of German lignite mining regions. Based on our results, we discuss the need for future research on the effects of policy designs of clean energy transitions on subjective perceptions of the future.

Characteristics, potentials, and challenges of transdisciplinary research

Resolving the grand challenges and wicked problems of the Anthropocene will require skillfully combining a broad range of knowledge and understandings-both scientific and non-scientific-of Earth systems and human societies. One approach to this is transdisciplinary research, which has gained considerable interest over the last few decades, resulting in an extensive body of literature about transdisciplinarity. However, this has in turn led to the challenge that developing a good understanding of transdisciplinary research can require extensive effort. Here we provide a focused overview and perspective for disciplinary and interdisciplinary researchers who are interested in efficiently obtaining a solid understanding of transdisciplinarity. We describe definitions, characteristics, schools of thought, and an exemplary three-phase model of transdisciplinary research. We also discuss three key challenges that transdisciplinary research faces in the context of addressing the broader challenges of the Anthropocene, and we consider approaches to dealing with these specific challenges, based especially on our experiences with building up transdisciplinary research projects at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies. ll

ZusammenfassungSeit dem im Jahre 2019 beschlossenen Kohleausstieg ist die Lausitz als eine der drei bundesrepublikanischen Kohlereviere ins Bewusstsein einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit gerückt. Es handelt sich um eine Region, die sich nach dem dreißigjährigen Transformationsprozess im Zuge des Einheitsprozesses dadurch erneut in einem tiefgreifenden Strukturwandel befindet. Der Beitrag geht auf Basis einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse von Positionspapieren verschiedener Lausitzer Akteur*innengruppen aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft der Frage nach, wie sich in diesen Stellungnahmen Forderungen und Zielvorstellungen eines sozialökologischen Wandlungsprozesses abbilden. Als Kategoriensystem wird auf die 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) der von der Bundesrepublik unterzeichneten AGENDA 2030 der United Nations (UN) zurückgegriffen, die mit den fünf Kernbotschaften People, Prosperity, Planet, Partnership und Peace ein Programm zur ökonomischen, ökologischen und sozialen Nachhaltigkeit im Sinne eines integrativen Nachhaltigkeitskonzepts entwickelt hat. Das empirische Vorgehen verfolgt ein doppeltes Ziel: Es werden die Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen den Perspektiven der Lausitzer Positionspapiere und den 17 SDGs herausgearbeitet, sodass auf dieser Basis das Profilbild eines möglichen Lausitzer Transformationsprozesses entlang der AGENDA 2030 entsteht. Zum anderen wird die Bedeutung der Sozialen Arbeit innerhalb dieses Profilbilds ausgelotet und im Anschluss diskutiert, welche Potenziale die Nachhaltigkeitsorientierung der 17 SDGs für die Soziale Arbeit hat.
