Often quoted as the queen of an oasian region, namely the Zibans, Biskra, a southern Algerian city, was a famous winter station renowned for its tourist character during the French colonization (1830-1962). This stimulated the colonizing authorities to build several hospitality buildings, the largest of which were edified using imported constructive techniques, but with local constructive materials and several local spatial organizations and regional decorative motives. In continuation of previous research work carried out by the first author of this article, this study aims to analyse and classify Biskra’s main hotels to draw up an architectural typology using Philippe Panerai’s method. As a result, four models were identified within the corpus of the study, including seven (7) hotels. Its findings could be considered as strong, helpful support for future research in the field of architectural heritage, regardless of building typology, as well as an appropriate database for the heritage buildings’ practical preservation. Moreover, such research work should inform about other various underrated and misjudged heritage buildings dating from the colonial era in Algeria.

PurposeAs historic cities evolve, change in their urban form can be expected. Yet, uncontrolled change of land plots, which represent a significant element of urban form, leads to uncontrolled change in buildings' configurations and typologies threatening accordingly the urban character of heritage contexts. Mechanisms controlling plot subdivision, however, can play an effective role in guiding developments and in controlling urban change in heritage settings. The present study seeks to assist decision-makers in their attempt to control urban change in heritage areas through a plot-based approach.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is divided into three sections: the first focuses on plot subdivision as a key aspect of urban form; the second illustrates the case of the heritage village of New Gourna in Luxor and the third includes discussion and implications of adopting a plot-based morphological approach to control morphological transformation in heritage contexts. For the morphological analysis of New Gourna, the study relied on comparative cartographic analysis of original drawings of the village versus the situation in 2022. The morphological analysis focuses mainly on qualitative and quantitative aspects of plot configurations and building patterns.FindingsFindings support the urgency of establishing a plot-based strategy to maintain urban character of heritage contexts in Egypt and call for a plot-based morphological approach to control change and inform new development attempts.Originality/valueThe present research provides an assessment of the morphological transformation of the heritage village of New Gourna. In addition, it proposes a plot-based approach for heritage contexts under transformation.

La identificación y análisis de las formas urbanas adquiere relevancia por dos motivos: (a) permite conocer cómo se ha desarrollado, cómo funciona y qué problemas tiene la ciudad en su conjunto y sus diferentes partes; (b) informa y guía procesos de intervención en el diseño y proyecto urbano. Los estudios existentes sobre forma urbana se han centrado tradicionalmente en las grandes ciudades, ignorando las formas y las lógicas de crecimiento de las pequeñas ciudades y de los municipios rurales. Este artículo, en base a un reciente sistema de análisis paramétrico de la forma física construida Spacemate, presenta un método de carácter objetivo, sistemático y extrapolable para la identificación, clasificación y análisis de formas urbanas válido para ciudades y asentamientos de diferente tamaño, dimensión, ubicación o bagaje histórico. La información relativa a la forma física que utiliza Spacemate ha sido recogida de Catastro y reelaborada y tratada con el apoyo de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica. Los resultados permiten establecer una catalogación de formas urbanas e identificación de problemas básicos que son un importante punto de partida para estrategias de intervención en la ciudad.
