PurposeThis study aims to identify how the involvement of female university students in volunteer organisations is contributing to their self-empowerment in Bangladesh.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional study with a qualitative approach was conducted. A total of 20 in-depth interviews with female student volunteers, two focus group discussions with student members of the volunteer organisation and ten key informant interviews with academics, gender experts and high-level representatives of civil society organisations were conducted. The data were collected from eight purposively selected universities in Dhaka. The data were collected between 1 January 2023 and 23 March 2023.FindingsThe inter-organisational environment appears to be supportive and welcoming, despite the fact that some male colleagues belittle women with insulting comments. Female students are predominantly involved in public presentation activities and their advice is rarely considered. To reach a top position, they have to show more commitment than their male colleagues. Subjective prejudices discourage women from taking on positions of responsibility. Participation in voluntary organisations strengthens the self-confidence, critical thinking, networking and social capital of female students, making it easier for them to gain employment. These factors contribute to the empowerment of female students.Originality/valueThis study is an excellent empirical document that establishes a link between the empowerment of female students and their participation in voluntary activities. The recommendations of this study pave the way for future research in different countries on how volunteering helps young people, especially female students, to shape their future by taking on social responsibility alongside their academic activities.

O voluntariado corporativo tem um papel reconhecido e importante a desempenhar no alcance dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) das Nações Unidas, entretanto, a literatura explorando o papel do voluntariado em relação aos ODS ainda é limitada. Com referência ao cooperativismo também há uma falta de estudos que investiguem como as práticas desempenhadas pelas cooperativas contribuem para a realização dos ODS. Por isso este artigo analisa como o voluntariado corporativo em uma cooperativa pode contribuir para a implementação dos ODS a partir das perspectivas dos voluntários. Para atingir este propósito foram realizados quatro focus group com voluntários, além da análise documental sobre as ações de voluntariado na cooperativa. A partir da análise de conteúdo das informações coletadas conclui-se que o voluntariado corporativo serve como estratégia para a cooperativa estar próxima da comunidade onde está inserida, e com isso praticar ativamente seus princípios e valores, colocando-se efetivamente como organização empresarial transformadora. A combinação dessas práticas de voluntariado com os ODS, seus objetivos e metas, fortalece as práticas que passam a ser orientadas por diretrizes globais com aplicabilidade local.

Responsabilidad social: voluntariado universitario y comportamiento virtuoso. El caso de una ciudad de Perú

El presente trabajo tiene como propósito explorar la responsabilidad social del estudiante universitario desde la perspectiva del voluntariado como comportamiento virtuoso. Se aplicó un instrumento a una muestra (318 participantes) no probabilística por conveniencia. Se realizó un análisis factorial exploratorio y se examinaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas según características sociodemográficas. Los resultados muestran diferencias significativas según los criterios: años de permanencia en la universidad y según la pertenencia a grupos de voluntariado. Los estudiantes que declaran poseer dos años de permanencia en la universidad expresan una mayor valoración significativa en la dimensión planteamiento del ejercicio profesional desde el compromiso social. Lo anterior, coincide con la mayor valoración expresada por los estudiantes que pertenecen a grupos de voluntariado. En conclusión, las casas de estudios superiores pueden utilizar estrategias asociadas al voluntariado universitario para la formación en responsabilidad social, para lo cual es relevante desarrollar estrategias que procuren la sensibilidad social, comportamiento virtuoso y el compromiso social.
